Did you unbolt the steering colum from under the dash? You will also have to remove your steering wheel because it will be in the way. You have to pull out your heater and AC control panel and disconnect their vent cables. Not sure about the '76 but those controls attach the dash to the AC stuff behind it to keep it rigid.

Installation was always easier without the steering wheel in the way, down in the southwest we were always concerned with causing any stress in the dash pad and maybe starting cracks due to the sun exposure.
