240z speedo not working
hello,
I recently purchased a 1971 240z. The speedo does not work in the car. when i say it does not work, it doesnt move at all. the first thing i checked was the speedo cable. The cable is a newer cable, and it is in great working order. The next thing I checked was i looked in the transmission where the cable goes, that was all in order.
I went under the dash and unhooked that end of the cable. I noticed that there is some sort of device that is hooked up in line with the speedo cable. it screws onto the back of the speedo and the speedo cable hooks to the other end. there is also some sort of other fitting that goes onto the side of this device. I removed and inspected this device. I did notice that the part that goes into the actual speedo to turn the gauge seems to be sheered off and i guess stuck into the gauge i guess. any ideas what this device is, or what it could be? i need to get it fixed.
thanks a million

Sounds like it could be a VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor).
Does it have any wires attached to it?
It could also be a ratio adapter to change the calibration of the speed, due to a gear change.
You could likely bypass that piece, but again, depending on what it actually is, it could change the calibration of the speedo.

here is a pic. Let me know what you think. I fixed the speedo and bypassed this little devise and the speedo does work, but i am not sure if it is accurate. I am going to check the accuracy against gps tomorrow.
thanks
