You are right, I need to replace all the hoses. Most hoses on my car are brittle looking. This won't be too hard to do either.

Arhg!

Just read through this thread as I'm having exhaust problems in my new/old 260Z. I took it to Midas and the checked the exhaust from the engine back and said there were no leaks.

The car came with a really stupid looking chrome tip that flanges out like the end of a trombone horn, I removed this and it seemed to help a little but now the end of the exhaust pipe is under the bumper.

Will this help, having a new tip placed on the end of the exhaust, running it out an extra 4-5 inches and either having it turn down or to the side?

Here's what the exhaust looks like now, dumping out behind he bumper, there's also a picture of the chrome tip that came on the car that's headed for the trash can.

Here's a picture of the hatchback gasket where it looks like it's compressed to less than stock height.

Your tip MUST be welded completely around and sealed....

What is happening is that Exhaust is comming out around the joint between the tip and the muffler exit... this allows it to build up underneather the rear valance... there are several paths for fumes to enter the car under there...

I know you were thinking that the "seal" on the tip is nothing to worry about... it is only 6 inches from the exit... BUT!!!!!! this is 6" TOO FAR underneath the car...

The ENTIRE SYSTEM must be COMPLETELY SEALED until it actually LEAVES the bodywork... I had this problem with my current track car... I sealed the tip on the muffler and my fumes went away....

That makes total sense. I have a stainless Supertrap so I think I will put some copper gasket sealer around the pipe and reclamp it. Thanks, Tom

Thanks for the insight, I'll print this out and take it with me to Midas tomorrow morning!

Darrel on here had a spec for the acceptable range fore/aft for the exhaust tip to avoid having the car hoover up the fumes. I don't remember what it was. Maybe he can post it?

I dont know what the exact acceptable range is... but I would make sure it is even with the bumper or slightly less... it will knock you in the shins if it sticks out too far...

If you notice in the picture... the exhaust exit welded to the muffler is indeed outside of the bodywork... hence the improvement when the tip was removed... With the tip in place... it overlaps the welded short tube and leaves a gap that exhaust will seep out of underneath the rear valance...

I had a muffler guy swear that exhaust would not escape there... Well... it does...

I wanted to be able to remove my tip... I used high temp silicone and used a lot of it...

I had an extension put on the end of my exhaust pipe too. It works pretty good, it just sticks out a little bit past my bumper, sometimes exhaust will still come in the windows after I slow down... like if I'm on the freeway and then get on the off ramp, the smell comes in. I have just learned to live with this... I am wondering... do you think my exhaust pipe should be longer? It's only about 1.5 inches past the end of my bumper.

Is your extension completely sealed to the pipe it slips over???

When you roll down the windows in the S-30 Z cars air escapes out of the window openings... this causes the pressure inside the car to drop remarkably... Any slight leak in the bodywork will begin to Hoover air in from under the car... That is why you always smell more fumes with the windows open in your Z...

There are literally dozens of areas under the rear of the S-30s that can allow exhaust fumes to enter the car... sometimes something as small as a missing srew or fastener can leave an opening that will allow fumes into the cockpit...

The best fix for this is to keep the exhaust completely sealed until it actually leaves the tailpipe....

Cool

yes, myne is completely sealed, and it only happens when the windows are down! I am use to it now.

I am planning to drop my gas tank in about 2 weeks. And also check every fuel hose to check for cracks. I hope to find the problem I have when the car is full of gas, and fumes leak out in the garage.

Hey, z_lis, how'd the repair go? If you haven't done it yet, it's worth noting that Motorsport says they now have the vent line grommets back in stock, $26:

Of course, I reinstalled my tank 6 months ago, thinking "Nah, they'll never get those made in the near future". Oops.
I don't think they have all the vent lines, though.
