Gas tank/spare well elimination 101

My factory tank is trash. I am sick and tired of messing with it, and the lineer that's in it. I don't want to dump money into it.

So. I figure.

Dump the factory tank, the straps, hoses, filler assembly, and gas lid.

Replace it with a race fuel cell that is much lighter.

But, if I were to cut the factory spare tire well out, and mount it in that location to gain room for future exhaust upgrades, would it really save weight?

Do you have to do much to the area to brace it if the wheel well is removed?
I really don't see the well doing that much bracing in the first place, but I could be very wrong.

I tagged onto an old thread on Hybridz asking the same basic question.
But, I like to pool as many ideas as I can.

I think the car would look clean without the fuel door too.

While I am at it, I could fab up a tray for a rear mounted battery too. Help balance the car more.

I like your idea..i am currently having a similar problem..the liner in mine turned to tar and killed my pump, so im in the same boat..im wanting to replace my tank but finding a good place to mount a cell is a pain, however 1/2 the price of a stock replacement unit, however no sending unit...let me know what you are planning and maybe we can swap ideas.
