Gods of Zdriver please HELP!
Alright....
Found out that I have an aftermarket cam, but the oil spray tube was still in place. No big deal, I hear that is a matter of preference. Because the cam is drilled to be self oiling. But the assemble was broken, and leaking off any possible oil pressure it might have held.
I was doing some maintenance because of some excessive ticking from the valve train. Thought I might have a sticking valve, but it looks like one of the rockers had some bad premature wear on the contact path. I could not get enough clearance to remove the rocker with the cam in place. I thought about compressing a valve spring and lowering the valve, but did not want to risk dropping a valve in the head.
So, I decided I would slip the cam forward enough to get that rocker out of the rear of the engine.
I tied the timing chain up with wire ties, and did not let there be any slack in the chain when I removed the sprocket.
But, now the sprocket is not stretching onto the cam...
I don't see what it could be hung up one.
But, it just won't go that extra 1/4 inch.
What do I have to do? Am I going to have to remove the timing cover???
God I hope not.
The faster I get an answer the better. I am in a hurry to get the car back on the road.
Thanks for any help.
Feel free to start the noob bashing. I can take it.

might have to its that damn tensioner if you let it have slack it can zoom out on you and you just cant get enough movement to put the sprocket and chain back on. probably have to remove the timing cover to re-adjust the tensioner.

Did some searches... Looks like the tensioner is the problem.. Wow. Didn't think it would do that. Think my day just turned to ****.
Anyone know how to reset the tensioner with the front cover on???
For the record.
I now hate myself. I'm gonna kick my *** when this is over.
What exactly does the tensioner do when it pushes out? Is it just a spring mechanism? Can you push it back in with a pry bar?

Well.. I got it. I used some long skinny pry bars that I happened to have, and I was able to pop it back into place without having to force it. I almost gave up after 20 mins, but they it just kinda fell into place. Didn't think I had it, but I was able to slide the sprocket back on.
I figured I would have to hold the chain from falling. Didn't read up enough to know that the tensioner pops out. Lesson learned. Sometimes you just figure you don't need directions. But, until I do a build with one of these engines, I am going to double check myself.
On the side note.
My valve cover is awesome looking. Got a second one with the E31 head I just bought. Etched it, and painted it with gloss black engine enamel, and sanded the NISSAN-OHC to the alluminum so it lookes brushed. Also did the two inner lines down the center, and used some paint to paint the oil fill cap silver. (Will do till I get that sweet Billet Z logo cap)
Fixed my oiling issued, and replaced the rocker that was giving me problems.
All is well in the Datsun kingdom over here.
Now I have to go kick my own ***.
Thanks for the help.

Almost knocked some teeth out, but I showed me. I will think twice before pissing myself off like that again.
Also added a PCV to the system now. So instead of positive pressure in the crank case, it has vacuum. Car seemed to like that. And, no more fumes coming inside the car from the breather that was on there.
