My Z is a stock 1982 Turbo. Here in Phoenix during the very hot summers can I use regular unleaded gas with out an intercooler? Also has anyone installed or used a J&S Electronics "SafeGuard" engine knock controller? I just bought my Z this winter. I love these cars, and would be thankful for any help or information. If you wish to run higher boost, then you will need an intercooler with a high effeciency of thermal transfer. When it's really hot outside, you may not get that much from the intercooler (some, but not much, so boost will have to be low), but when it cool, you will really be able to use it.
I would say that the boost limit for the 280ZX, for safety to the engine, is about 10psi with a good intercooler
Treat your Z well, and it will treat you well.
