replace vacuum advance?

replace vacuum advance?
So, as I'm fiddling with my triple Mikunis, and reading on here, I come across info on the vacuum advance.
If I'm not pulling vacuum properly to advance my timing, I'm assuming tuning the carbs is useless.
Currently, my vacuum line is a thin clear tubing. The end on the carb is a bit hard and it slides on an off the vacuum port very easily. I pulled it off the bottom of the distributor and checked vacuum from that end of the line.
At first, the vacuum gauge barely wiggled. When I pinched the line tight against the vacuum port to help it seal, I started getting way better readings, but the were all over (probably because of the makeshift seal my fingers were helping make) the place.
I'm thinking I need to just replace that little piece of line to "be sure" it's sealing properly.
Am I correct? No advance could make it feel pretty anemic up high? Plus it's about $1 in parts.
Thanks
JM
