Shifter T5?

See the attached image. Nissan transmission on top, Borg Warner T5 on bottom.
The T-5 has a rectangle plate that bolts down with four small bolts. The shifter goes through this plate into a receiver below. There is no pin to hold the shifter in. The Nissan transmissions came in two types. The early transmissions 1974 and before were all 4-speeds (in the US). The later transmissions starting in 1975 were long tail transmissions and have the pin you describe as pictured in the upper tranmission.

I've seen the spring shifter your talking about. It is the only year ('81) I came across that had it. Only the ball end bushing is the same.
