240Z from a 280Z?
Alright guys, I have a question here. I know that the 240, 260, and 280Z's all use the same chassis. Now what I wondering is how hard would it be to take a 280Z essentially tear off the bumpers, fenders, and whatnot, and essentially convert it so it looks like the 240Z? My next question is, what would essentially be the differences if you were to convert a 280Z into a 240Z with the L28 engine as opposed to getting a 240Z and dropping in an L28? The main reason I ask, is because I'd like to eventually do a 240Z project, with an L28. Since the 280Z's are more available around here, I figured I'd run it by you guys.

Well the main thing I was curious about was if there would be major weight differences. Those charts and whatever claim the 240Z was under 2500lbs. I know the 280Z was supposedly around 2800lbs. I guess it would make sense, with the added weight of the fuel rail, ECU, etc. But if you were to drop an L28 into a 240Z, would it weigh about the same as a 280Z? Weight is key!

The added weight is in the body to make it more ridgid, and the bigger bumpers. The only differance on the outside are the bumpers, taillights, and front turn signals.
The motor should actualy weigh less considering it is basicaly the same block with a bigger bore. But probably pretty close with the longer crank throw and hevier manifold.
Inside, the dash is the most noticable differance.

In terms of the dash. Some of the pics I've seen or at least the first couple 280Z's look like they had a dash pretty much the same as the 240Z, but then the later 280Z's look like the Dash is a fair bit different.
