How do you tell the year of the trannys? I,m going to buy a 5 speed and parts to change from auto to standerd.some say some years have a beter ratio than others. what are the best ones to look for? how do you tell them apart?

 

83 turbos came with a borg wagner T5 trans which can handle more horsepower but the general feel is that the other stock nissan unit allowed for faster shifting, since yours is n/a you don't really need the T5.

 

I guess it depends on what you want to do. I installed a 5 speed out of a 77 datsun pickup into a 70 240. It had great lowend in 1st -3rd and 4 and 5 where good for highway driving. now the down side is first maxed out at about 27mph at 6200RPM 2nd went to almost 70 3rd could hit about 110. But 4th dropped over 1500 RPM and slowed you down a lot. 5th was strictly a highway gear. I recorded some of my fastest times in that car.
The plus side if you want to autocross or road race it has the ***** to get you out of a corner and down a stretch. It also seemed stronger on the power shifts. It could handle the high rev downshifts alot better then my 78 does.
but this is just an oppionion. Get the one that does what you want.
