Best Muffler For A Zed
My problem is that I have a l28 engine in a 260z and the exhaust system gets a loud tiney sound in the high revs. It's great in low revs very deep. Could it be the resonator because it's been removed or the actual brand of muffler. If so what's the best sounding muffler for a Zed with a 2 and a 1/4 inch pipe?
Thanx

All a matter of taste. I ran no muffler for awhile. Sounded mean too. The sound you describe is pretty much what all zcars sound like. Supertrapp makes a good muffler too!

Evan.....I'm running a 2" exhaust (headers straight to reverse flo muffler)...have been for 20yrs. It could be my 14.5 limiting problem...just constipated the Z? I'm looking at a 2.5inch pipe...and a stainless RADIC straight thru muffler next few months. 2.82L block, cam, webers, 12:1 compr (barrel gas/mix).....
What do you run for exh? Most folks saying this will be a big improvement?

Wow, that sure sounds like too little to me!
With those webers and cam pounding as much air as possible into your engine, you really need some more place for it to go!
Given the high CR/webers I'd say you want a 2.5" system. (I'm guessing that the car sees redline on occasion) Supertrapps can sound really good.

It is a resonator problem. You will get that type of sound without a resonator. If you install a performance resonator you will not decrease performance but you will get rid of the "resonance". I still need to do it to my car, it makes my ears bleed on long trips... I plan to drive it to the Historic races again this year and would like to be able to hear people talking to me after the drive btw I am running 2.5 off of a tri-y header with a 2 chamber flowmaster.

Re: Best Muffler For A Zed
On my car i have a muffler called a proflow it is like a turbo muffler and is all welded. Welded to it is 21/2" pipe and a header, very loud when I am on it. When I do drive sane it has a very deep inline six rumble. Car alarms hate it, I love it. I have had people ask if there is a V8 under the hood! Rather than give you an opinion, I tell what I have and you make up your own opinion on whats best.

For some good flow, and not too much noise, stick with a 2.25" pipe. The pipe size will make a big different on resonance. Put a resonator in the middle of the car with some kind of muffler in the back. I use a Flowmaster on the back.
a 2.5" pipe will have more deep hum to it inside the car.
I used a 2.5" pipe, and regret it. My engine isn't all that modified anyway, and a 2.25 would of been fine for my setup. Its a daily driver anyway, although i do get into the 5K rpm range often. With my stock cam, it doesn't need to rev any higher

My old exhaust was 2.5 inch with a glasspack right after the header. It sounded great. Honestly, i thought it was loud until i had my new 3" system done last night. That thing DRONES. very annoying. However, when your on it, it sounds AWESOME. I think the DBs that my exhaust puts out might attract the wrong kinda attention though. I have a dynomax race magnum muffler in the back (basically a short glasspack). I am going to try a resonated tip to kill off a few dbs. However, there is NO room under my car anywhere for a resonator.
