blow off valve
Will any blow off valve, fit a turbo? or do i need a spicific style.
I am collecting parts for my turbo project, i already have a intercooler, and now i am looking for a blow off valve. I am not sure of what turbo i am getting, im thinking about a garret t3. But is it too small for a in-line 6?
thanks for the help

Re: blow off valve
Any blow off will do, it just depends on what sound you want and how loud you want it. I have an HKS SSQV and an HKS Super Blowoff that I switch between depending on what I feel like hearing. The SSQV makes a high pitched "peeef" noise and the HKS Super Blowoff makes a "psssh" sound. A T3 Garrett is what is on a stock 280zxt or 300zxt. It should do fine. Just double check the A/R if you can. I think the ones on the Z cars are a .63 A/R. Some other cars use a T3 but with a smaller A/R like a .48 for better spooling, but less top end breath. You might want to look into a T3/T4 since you going to build a turbo car, I've seen some for cheap on EBAY or ask a local turbo supplier they might be able to help you out too.

Re: blow off valve
If you are going to be using fuel injection for you turbo motor, you will need a bypass valve instead of a blow off valve. The AFM will be metering the air that is being vented to the atmosphere and will screw of your air/fuel mixture. The bypass valve vents the air back to the inlet side of the turbo, giving you the same effect as a blow off valve, just without the noise and a little more plumbing.

Re: blow off valve
umm...i am not sure of what i am going to do at the moment. I do have a efi off a 280z, but i am looking for SU carbs. I currently have the stock engine in. I already bought a intercooler. I might end up selling the EFI since it would be alot more troubble to get in and more money, for ECU and ect.
I am waiting for a good price on t3/t4 my friend bought his for only $150.00 off ebay, but now its up to $200+.
And also, is it possible to spray paint my intercooler, it is silver right now, but i want it to be black. I am trying to make my turbo un-noticeable, Also will a bypass valve work on both EFI and carb?
thanks for the help guys

Re: blow off valve
ok tony
if you want smooth reliable turbo motor that will make more power more easily use EFI and get an aftermarket ecu .. the car will go a lot better. The T3/T4 hybrid turbo will be a good bet and a blow off valve is a must for the pssshht sound. I know plent of people that run vent to atmosphere BOVs and run AFMs that have no problems with over richening. If you get a plum back you won't get any noise ...

Re: blow off valve
Since you're going for performance and don't really care for the sound, before you buy a particular bypass or blowoff, check and see how much pressure that thing will hold before it leaks. Different companies have different threshold pressures. Bypass valves that I've seen go for cheap tend to leak above 12 psi like the Bosch unit. Blowoffs usually go good up to about 18 like Blitz, HKS, Greddy Type R, some go more some less.

Re: blow off valve
how much performance are you going to go? im going to be getting my turbo motor built soon as well, ill be running a 2.9L block with a fully ported p90 head, 300z ecu, 280zxt harness, 300z MAF sensor, t3 turbo, and other mods...we are looking for about 300-330hp at the wheels with 13psi...ill be using the turbonetics blow off valve or maybe a blitz...you want something to handle high psi if you run more boost.

Re: blow off valve
Can someone explain to me which parts off the 300zx are interchangable with the 280zx efi intake manifold. I have the P90 head F54 block at home but no manifolds, dizzy , EFI etc. So I would like to know what I could do relatively cheaply to get a Fuel injected motor into my 240z.

Re: blow off valve
What's the difference with Bypass valve and blow off valve, it depends who you talk to.
In my opinion the bypass valve is the same thing that goes on the 280zxt turbo manifold and function more as a safety device. When there's to much air in the manifold it releases it releases the air. Notice there is no vacuum lines that connect to it. It doesn't know when to release air. Only by how much pressure that's in the manifold.
A blow off valve is to keep the turbo from surging when the throttle plate closes. Instead off the air rushing back to the turbo, it releases through the bov. There is a vacuum hose that attaches to the bov.
Under boost air is pushing towards the bov through the vacuum line, when you close the throttle plate the left over air is being sucked into the engine causing a vacuum in the intake which would also cause a vacuum in the vacuum line going to the bov causing the valve to left up and release air.
When the bov is release into the atmosphere- at that moment the car run's rich. To prevent this you will have to plum the air back to the intake pipe. About 3" after the MAF or AFM.
Some manufatures call the bov a bypass valve. For example lots of people are using the Mitsubishi Eclipse BOV or what Mitsubishi calls it a Bypass Valve.
There are differences with the bov. Some have a dual chamber like HKS & Blitz for low and high boost. They also have a racing version that has a stiffer spring for the bigger turbo's. There are other brands that have the dual chamber. Also there is a difference on who they are made. I love the sounds of the HKS ssbov but it has a rubber or plastic diaphram (I forgot which material) which will wear out over time. The Blitz uses a copper one.
Pick the right bov according to your setup. I'm sure a regular, even a cheap one from the junk yard from the Mits Eclipse bov would work fine if your just starting up. Upgrade to a better bov when you upgrade your turbo.
Hope this helps.
