blown turbo head gasket at 10psi
Here is an update and a cry for advice!
I removed the head and found everything in order except
The head gasket is blown thru on #2 and deformed on 4 other cyl.
The only cylinder ok was #6 . [It must be slacking! ]
I have good digital photos if you want.
This was the first time I ran hard with 10 psi boost [1983 280ZXT]
so I suspect that did it.
Help!
What do I do? What gasket will hold up?
Thanks

SCE Gasket... Get your block o-ringed at a machine shop and make dang sure that you block and head are flat before you put it together. Use a gasket sealer on your copper gasket that contains hylomar. Most of the other stuff will leak.

Re: blown turbo head gasket at 10psi
I wonder if the gasket blew because it was 104k miles and 20 yrs old or was it detonation?
The gasket material seems good. It's just deformed by pressure in 5 cylinders.
Apparently the stock gasket has survived 14 psi often. A metal gasket [$160] is stronger than a piston ring so I better stick with the stock gasket [$20], I can fix gasket easier.
I heard a rattling at 5000 rpm and 10 psi. like when there is mucous in the lungs. NOT a ping ping that I associate with Detonation. What does pre-ignition sound like. Remember the engine was super rich as indicated by plugs, black smoke, and EGT guage never ovr 1300F. All combust chamb look the same - black soot, no scale build up like my other head. the sound got louder until I noticed a drop in power. 1/6 [17%]aprox or is it 75psi/145psi of 1/6??? It felt like 40% less!!!
I am going to get a fuel pres guage and reduce the richness. I didnt think it was dangerous, just wastefull.
Any suggestions?

Re: blown turbo head gasket at 10psi
my head gasket went away last year and i did the following: nismo/hks metal head gasket [choice of either 1 or 2mm depending on your compression ratio requirements] and head studs-not bolts. i used arp. called them direct to understand the difference b/w studs [i was using the nissan turbo bolts] vs. bolts. here's the skinny-studs provide greater clamping pressure also allow more consistent torquing. due to the nature of the stud material the clamping pressure increases as the head comes up to temp [alum. expands as it heats] but the studs don't expand/stretch. it took an engineer 30min. to explain all of this to me. follow the directions on the arp box for tq specs. i listened to someone who i thought was a reputable engine builder who sold me the studs [he rcmd a much higher tq than arp] and i sheared a stud off in the block-able to get it out but...
anyway, running more boost now and have seen no probs so far [knockin' on wood].
hope this helps!

i believe the arp stud kit was retail from arp $141.16, less thru a local source, good for more hp, don't know how much exactly. website:
