bogging out at top of 3rd gear
Hey again,
when going hard thou the gears, at around 4000rpm in 3rd gear it starts bogging out, I've put new points in, with 45mm gap, new ignition cable, and it does it still...its really annoying.. 1st gear revs fine all the way.2nd feels fine, but a bit sliggish at the top but 3rd 4th and 5th don't go well at higher gears
its a freash L26 with 240z SU's with points ignition..
the dizzy seems like its old, but still fine, but i'm thinking of going electronic ignition from a 280zx to see if that helps. but i want a electronic ignition anyway.. so i'm going to get it if it helps it or not..

If you've done all that, it wouldn't hurt just to yank the plugs to see what kind of mixture you're running. The whitish color on the plug tip indicates too lean, and the dark carbon build up look will indicate too rich-obviously. If you're running to lean, the extra load put on the engine in the higher gears could possibly cause you to bog down. There's not as much load in first or second because of the lower ratios which would explain why it doesn't do it in those gears. If you are running hard through the gears, then you are probably dropping it down around 4000 in third once you've shifted from second. This is where your bogging is occuring and where more load is being applied. Running too rich would be more likely to cause you to bog at lower rpm's while pulling away from a stop-not your problem at present. Just try it to see where you are, if you've tried all else, it could possibly be the carbs.

Have you tried replacing your coil itself. You may have insufficient spark coming from it. In hi gear at higher rpm's your spark may be running out. I have the same problem and it occurs right about 110mph. I know I don't really need to go that speed but in case I have to I want to be able to hit 140 like I use to. I'll let you know what happens but try that for now. Your fuel pump may not be pushing enough gas eighther.
