Crazy FUMES!
Hey guys this is my first post. Thanks for welcoming me. I purchased a '78 280z in the hopes of restoring it in the future but its in need of some motor work now. She is running crazy rich and I'm trying to find out why. I'm looking for an O2 sensor on the exhaust some where but I can't find it. I'm thinking maybe that's faulty. Do we have a knock sensor on these cars? I know in my other car (talon) I have one and when that went bad it made the car pig rich. Maybe a faulty injector or fuel regulator? Do you guys have any ideas I can try to fix this problem? I appreciate any info. Thanks in advance.

Ya, check and replace the fuel pressure regulator. It is a round thing on top of the fuel rail and has a single rubber hose running to the top of the intake manifold to detect vaccumme. That is my first guess. The oxygen sensor makes a small difference too. I think by 78 the 280Z should have an O2 sensor, even if it is not a California car. (California cars had O2 sensors and catalytic converters before the rest of the country)
Some people say to mess with the air flow meter, but that usually doesn't go bad like that. When it goes bad, your car won't run. The fuel pressure regulator sometimes gets stuck and keeps your fuel pressure high all the time.

Thanks for the reply BleachZee. I was thinking the same thing. I sorta snatched one from a junked 280 at the junkyard last weekend. I'm going to try it this weekend hopefully it works. Where is the O2 located on the 280z? I can't find it. I don't have a cat. on my car either. The car did come from Canada if that helps. Thanks for the info. At least I'm on the right track.

Re: Crazy FUMES!
Your car doesn't have an o2 sensor. Your pressure regulator may be bad, coolant temp sensor, air temp sensor in AFM, air regulator, etc. You really need a FSM unless you want to replace parts to find the problem. My FSM for the 76 says that the air temp sensor is part of the AFM and can't be replaced, but Victoria British shows and a local parts store show an air temp sensor for these cars. Let us know what you find. I'm just getting back into my Z again and it has the same problem. Good Luck.

Re: Crazy FUMES!
My 78 does the same thing, except worse! I replaced all of the above and could not seem to find the prob. Ended up taking it to a mechanic and he said one or more of my injectors could be "stuck open" All I know is that if it idles more than a few minutes it seem to load up and flood out. Anyone heard of this? Could it be the injectors?
