diff between z and zx?
Tha amount of hp in a car doesnt always mean its faster right? Just from the mags and stuff ive read about z cars ive noticed the 240 has more hp then the 260 and 280 i dunno about the zx yet but y would the 60 and 80 have less hp?perfectindustries already asked this but does anybuddy know the difference in the z and the zx besides the body work? and are the z's real wheel drive or front , ive got alot of stupid questions but i just wanna know as much as i can about the z cars . are there any z shows or anything like that in California .... Thanx

Re: diff between z and zx?
the Zeds are all rear wheel drive. The 280ZX had a new body, and as such its suspension / chassis are also different from the 240 / 260 / 280. I think the 260 / 280 have less power because they had to adhere to more restrictive exhaust pollution rules.

1st generation 240/260/280zs look like this (same body shape, difference in bumpers, taillights, and turn signals)

mark 2 280ZX series. notice the difference in body overall

120 bucks delivered... the radio, dash, and lights all work. just got it to the shop today, cant wait till it gets looked at tomorrow! i hit the cat, or some exhaust item while getting it of my friend's trailer though... it put a big mark in it

The horsepower did increase, but so did the weight of each model.
A 1975 280Z says that it has 170hp on the metal plate in the engine compartment while a 1981 280ZX says it has 145hp. The 1975 Z is claiming power at the crank while the 1981 tells you about what you have at the wheels.
With the change in names from a 240Z to 280ZX, the number refers to the size of the engine. A 240Z has a 2.4L engine while the 280Z and 280ZX have a 2.8L engine. So the larger engine has more torque too.
Comparing all the early Z-cars to each other in stock form, the 240Z is just a little faster than them all, except for a stock 280ZX turbo which is the fasted. I think the slowest one was a 260Z because of high emissions regulations here in the USA, that year (1974) had a bad carburetor and fuel system. That can easily be changed out to use a 240Z carburetor set.
The 280ZX came out with other options like power windows, power locks, power mirrors, T-tops from 1980 on, cruise control, and in 1983 they had an available digital dash. All those power options include electric motors and electric motors weigh a lot. So that's one thing that contributes to the 280ZX being the heaviest car out of the Datsun Z. Power steering has a pump that is driven off the engine, again taking away a little power.
