ford 5.0 V8 on a z
Would it be possible to mount a ford mustang 5.0 into, say, a 280z? I have only seen conversions for chevy 350 motors but that is aprox.4.9 liters. the 5.0 sounds so cool that I would like to try it some time. I will also need the 280z w/o a motor or trans.

And actually, when I think about it more, the Ford 5.0 that went into the earlier generation Mustangs was really a 4.9 liter. Less power and less torque than the 350. Ford changed to the 4.6 because they were having a hard time getting the 5.0 to conform to EPA standards. Chevy still uses the 350. Another reason to not like FORD.

The 5.0, I believe was a 302. The Chevy 350 is much easier to modify. The parts are more readily availabe and much cheaper than a Ford. The 350 in my GMC has a weiland stealth alum. intake with an Edelbrock and I picked those up for $300.00. That's for both. I'm sure you can drop the 5.0 in that Z, if you have the money and resources you can do just about anything. I think the 350 is just more economical. That engine has been around for many years and if it's the first choice of "most" there has got to be a reason.

IMHO the SBC (small block Chevy) makes for a better conversion. The Ford has the oil sump in the front and it gets in the way of the front cross member and steering rack. There is a "double hump" pan available that helps a bit. Also, if you are going with a manual transmission, Ford never used hydraulic clutch so you will have to use a hydraulic throw out bearing.
BTW, Jags That Run http://www.jagsthatrun.com/Pages/Datsun_Z_V-8.html sells a conversion manual for the SBC conversion.
Stop over at Hybrid Z http://hybridz.org/ and ask that question. There is a special section for Ford conversions.

actually, you're wrong. there's nothing wrong with a ford conversion. you can shove 5.0 back further because the distributor is in the front. My buddies Mike and Al make ford v8 conversion mounts for the Z that also act as an extra crossmember, stiffening the chassis. The ford block with aluminum heads is just a tad lighter than the stock L series motor, with better weight distribution, and gobs more power.
