frame rust fixable?
I have had a '77 280z for a few years now, and I decided I want to go through everything and redo it. but just getting started I finally noticed just how bad the undercarriage is. I don't know the part exactly, but the part of the frame that holds the tension rod for the front suspension is completely rusted out, it's so bad that when I tried jacking on it, it crushed it in about an inch. My question is, first what is that part and can I find replacements? or am I just kidding myself by trying to fix rust in the undercarriage because the whole undercarriage is bad, the frame rails and the floor pans are shot, and basically everything else has at least surface rust. or would I be better off finding a rust-free shell?
thanks
p.s. if anybody has any rust-free shells let me know, it'll give me ideas. I'm from SW Minnesota but I'm always up for a good road trip to pick up a shell if I have to.

You'll have to travel if you want any rust-free bodies. The stock answer to the description you gave is to salvage as many parts as you can and scrap the car. Z's tend to be rust prone and don't survive the cancer very well. Lot's of good cars in the South still but, like I said, you'll have to be willing to travel.

When I finally started getting serious about getting it restored, we ended up deciding that the rust was just too serious. Found a good shell and moved all the electric and mechanicals from my original car to the new shell.
I hated to do that for sentimental reasons, but it would have economically foolish to keep heading down that path.
Bottom line: bite the bullet and try to find as clean a shell as you can. There are still a few out there.

travel for Zs
Try contacting Arizona Z Car. If I remember correctly, they have a " yard" full of them. Try getting recycler.com on the internet. there are lots of rust free cars still in So. Calif.

meh,
Your jack doenst sit on a frame rail i think,.it sits on a rocker.
Ive found all the rust on mine, both rockers and my battery tray and inner wheel well need replaced, found a donor car and I have a little mig welder, gonna do the work myself. If you are half proficient with a welder its really no biggie.
Guess its all what you are willing to do.
