Re: fumes
Most old z's you'll drive have pretty bad exhaust fume problems. These problems stem from: the tailight gaskets being shot as munkyjuce mentioned, holes in the firewall allowing exhaust fumes leaking from the headers to come in during operation, and the MAIN problem is the rear hatch seals being shot also. Due to Z aerodynamics, exhaust tends to tumble around in a pocket of "dead air" behind the z, seeping in through the bad gaskets. In the mean time, try leaving all your windows up with the vent on. This will create a positive pressure inside the car, helping to keep those fumes from leaking in as bad.-Taylor

Re: fumes
I had horrible fumes in my 260z 2+2. I found that it was the exhaust tip not being welded on properly and because the car was in an accident before there were leaks everywhere. I had an idea and that was to turn the exhaust on an angle so that the fumes go out towards the side of the car. Also the fatter the tip the more fumes will hang around the back.

Re: fumes
The aerodynamics on a old Z are funny.I found that if I leave only one window open its a little fumey but both windows down isnt bad at all. I resealed my tailights recently and leaned my carbs a bit..made a heck of a difference!

Re: fumes
i replaced the taillight & hatch seals as well as ensured the exhaust was not leaking. i found that running only one window open caused fumes in the cockpit-either both open or closed helps a lot.
