Help my sick Z.

My Z is sick . She bogs at any RPM over 4500, needs excess throttle to leave a stoplight, and idles poorly unless engine has warmed up. She also requires an excess amount of throttle when taking off from a stop. Any ideas?

how does it sound? it'd check the timing and make sure that it's firing on all cylinders firstly.

I'm guessing he's carb'd and doesn't have MAF/AFM

he is running stock carbs if i remember correctly. might need to synch them and do some tunning. also check your fuel pressure and plugs/wires cap rotar. since your carb'd it should be pretty simple

Well, haven't got a chance to dig into the carbs. I did replace the wires and plugs and I noticed a bit of difference, but she's still not right.

Oh, build is still a l24, carbureted, pertronix ignition. Not too much more. Swapped out to an 81 ZX alternator.

Check for vaccuum leaks, possible contaminants clogging fuel lines?

You have symtoms of a bad vacuum advance. Could be sticky choke linkage.

I know that my dizzy is on it's last leg, was told that quite a few years ago when I first got the car and was too afraid to work on it. Anyone know where to pick one up without spending $800 to get one from MSA?

As for choke linkage, the issue occurs even if I pop the hood and disable the choke by hand at the carbs.

you can order one from advance for about 80.00 give or take. i went ahead and swapped up to the 83 280zx dizzy and control module on my 260z, works like a charm and theres a write up around here on how to do it. its really simple and gets rid of that voltage resistor next to the coil. if i can find it again i'll post it up for ya.

Unless your dizzy has a lot of side play try picknpull and just get the vacuum advance off of any L6. Take a piece of vac line with you to test before you buy another bad one. Best is the E-12 from a '79-'81 but they can be badly worn too.
