Higher revving 280ZX?
I guess this is sort of a folloup to my last posting. Instead of overboring to a 3.1L, what about a higher revving engine? Say... 7500-8000 redline? Wouldn't that be more efficient for more power out of a turbo?

Re: Higher revving 280ZX?
id say a 3.1 is safer to rev that high. when you rev a turbo that high you create some dangerous engine conditions that can destroy your motor. you will spend tons and tons of money making it rev high safely. how would a person make it reliable and still rev that high? id go with the 3.1 and rev it to redline and then back off to the next gear. less parts to damage.

Re: Higher revving 280ZX?
Well first u gotta decide what you want .... the 3.1L will give you more bottom end torque opposed to making it rev the pistons out of the block, where the power increase will only be right up the rev range. I'm no expert when it comes to L28ET's, so most of this is just based on what ive found from other cars. I would think that if you wanted to run a high boost, 3.1 would not be a good idea as it would weaken the block. Also making the motor rev harder is not going to be easy, and you will want to make sure you turbo is going to take advantage of that high revving otherwise you will be just wasting petrol. In my oppinion, if you already have a turbo setup why not work on the turbo and computer ? it will probably be around the same money and will be easier and safer to do.
#1 why not upgrade your turbo to a newer more efficent model or
#2 get it high flowed and get a hybrid compressor wheel
#3 why not get an aftermarket computer with adjustable maps etc for real boost/power gains to be achieved there ...
These mods of course depend on the condition of the motor and drive train of the car. With the hard revving internals i think that will involve forged internals wont it ? and i know for one thing they are expensive ... when you get into shot peened cranks etc, and the same deal with the 3.1. You'll still need new pistons, block bored out etc and im my oppinion it will weaken the blcok beyond my liking for running a turbo. Then again if you want to make serious power with youre turbo you will need forged internals anyway. So i guess as usuall its all going to be limited by how deep the hole is in your pocket.
Maybe instead of all that mucking around why not just get an Skyline R32/R33 front cut and whack an RB20DET or RB25DET in instead .... lot easier then to make lots of power.
Hope this helped and good luck
Jake.

Yeah, I'll figure it out in time. I guess optimizing what I already have is the best idea. I'll have about $1K/month to upgrade the car... I'll have some fun at least.

I've been looking at the Jim Wolf ECU upgrade, but they havn't contacted me with the gains that I can expect for this little $500+ item. Its been like 5 days now... you'd think they would get right back to me.

Raising the redline on a turbo engine is one of the most INEFFICENT ways of making more power. The most efficent being raising boost.
I am not expert on L28ET's...but If you want big power maybe you could try a 1JZ or 2JZGTE :-)
