Re: HP for L28?
I believe the regular L28 had 138hp mabe 140, and i dont know about the turbo. Nothing like the old 240z's, now they had some power, and also about 2,000lb's less weight.

Caliz,
This is an old question that pops up from time to time.
What is the intended use of the vehicle ? Is it going to
run on pump gas or race gas ? With this information
you will get a much more precise answer.

Re: HP for L28?
This all boils down to how much cash you have. I am having about 15,000 put into my N/A motor to get around 300HP at the wheels. But I am not building mine for street I am building for Road Racing. I wont even see my car for 6 months to a year while these mods are being done.

Re: HP for L28?
Also, i was wondering why a Ford 2.3T motor can be taken from 190hp to a reliable 400hp, with some mods, and an L28 turbo with the same mods plus more, can barely produce that.....
I kinda figured a V-6 turbo would produce more power than a V-4 turbo, but???
This is just one example....there are plenty of ford 2.3T sites, but Turboford.org seems to be more informative.

I really dont believe they are talking about pump gas, especially not 91 craptane Crapifornian MTBE fuqtified gas.
I would suggest going for a 70-73 240z and give it a bit of get-up with a header, improve the air induction system, and maybe a mild cam/headwork. Other than that do you really need to have a billion RWHP?
To speak from my own experience, I have a 94 Camaro with heads/cam/headers etc that puts out over 400 RWHP NA. If you road race this is a ridiculous amount of HP unless you have a good amount of experience under your belt, even with my heavy *** 3400 pound car, I have no traction in first gear, and second will still kick the rear sideways, pretty much impossible to drive hard without full on slicks OR never putting the pedal all the way down.
So with that in mind, I'd suggest to be a bit more realistic, save some money, learn about the cars, and add a little here and there until your ready for a more serious project, wanting it all up front is something you wont be able to make much use of and will just cost money at the expense of being able to really drive the car to its potential.

By the way, to beef up the crappy gas we have here in CA you can buy tolulene, only $11 a gallon =(

Re: HP for L28?
AllmyZ's,
I would like to know who is building your motor. 300 RWHP out of a NA
L28 is completely awesome. That would be in the 330 plus crank HP range.
John Coffeys 3.0 stroker motor put out 309 crank HP and thats a high
end motor. I believe they squeezed a bit more out of it , but not the numbers
you are talking for a 2.8 liter.

Re: HP for L28?
Right now it is all on computer. I do not know the specs. I am leaving that up to my mechanic. I do know he is having a lot of modifacations made to the intake and exhaust. I am paying $15,000 for this engine. It isnt exactly gonna be street legal. But if i keep the car looking decent and i dont spin the tires evertime I accelerate i dont think I should get caught. Especially where i live. I will post the specs as i get them.

Re: HP for L28?
Well, technically an old car that is emissions exempt is only exempt if you keep the original engine in it. If you swap a 240Z to use an L28 or L28 Turbo, then the DOT requires you to inform them and possibly pass smog regulations for the year of car you pulled the motor from.
But who does that!?! hahahaha!
Don't worry about it. If its a straight six, just tell anyone who asks that its the stock engine with just a few little bolt-ons. hehe...

Re: HP for L28?
Bleach,
Idaho doesn't have any smog checks or laws like that .
You pretty much can modify it all you want . Engine and stereo
noise has just become a problem in the city here , so they are
ticketing for that. Darn kids and their stereos

Re: Bumpin Z-Cars
I've seen 500hp l28 turbos. I had a 300hp NA engine at one time... Cost me 12K to do it though.
I ran mid 5 sec 0-60mph, 148mph@7400rpm in 5th gear in a 2900lb 1978 280Z.
$$$ talks bullshit walks
What are you looking to do to a Z? how do you want to drive it? daily street machine or full tilt race?
Lots of questions, and most involve a question of how much money do you want to spend. There are some beautiful stock Z,s out there, and some rediculously modded z's as well.
200 rwhp in a 240 is serious power to weight, and takes a serious driver to enjoy it and not kill him/her self. And motor is not everything in these cars.. they are not drag cars eiather. Too many people do up the motor and not take into account the whole package. You will need to spend serious $$ on handling and braking abilities. This HAS to be factored into the long term plans of the car.

Re: Bumpin Z-Cars
I agree, if you road race at all it is better to have less power until you have serious experience levels.
I know because I made the mistake of turning my car into a 411 RWHP "beast" at ~3400 pounds, and it was just beyond my driving skill. Although I still would LOVE to have a freaking 550ish HP V8 in a 240z, it will be best left as a second 240Z project, not my primary road racer wannabee.

Re: Bumpin Z-Cars
I am still considering my engine design. I have raced autocross in cali back in the 80,s. I havent been on a conventional track since then. But have torn up some serious mountain and canyon roads ina 325hp T/A and 12 different Z,s. I have been thinking of power to gear. Its a tricky situation trying to balance power and performance. I also want durability and i know the more you push out of a motor the shorter the life span. It would be nice to have 300rwhp but can I keep that under me in a road race. I dont much care how fast my qaurter mile times are i prefer the skidpad, and slalom. I have 2 motors to play with so I am gonna experoment with aroound 240-250 rwhp in my 78 this March in Las vegas. Then decide what to do with the second motor.
