I bought the z

WOA! That's a funky 260Z! Well, tuning SU carbs is where I don't offer any advice. i have not gotten to those in any of my L-series surgeries. I'll know more once I rebuild and tune the L20 engine in my Fairlady Z.
The fuel filter looks small, and the fuel hose is cracking! Get the see-through outside Fram fuel filter (K&N looking internals) and then I use a second inline microfilter. Replace the Fram filter with each oil change and as long as the microfilter looks clean then leave it. Mine has changeable inserts and a nice glass housing. Ok, so this is on my 4-cyl truck, but its still an L-series Datsun engine.
Replace those hoses too! They are really cheap. I wouldn't worry about sanding the rust off the exhaust pipe. it'll still rust. Clean up your linkage and intake manifold. You see that more often and you can replace bolts with stainless steel as you go through each section.
On dual carbs, it is possible the carbs are out of sync and that one is running too lean. That would cause it to spudder at idle and giving more gas clears it up. Try adjusting each carb's richness or vaccume the same... anyway, I'll stop. I really don't know how to tune an SU. The Weber's are EZ

thanx
I set the fuel mixture the same on both and the one time that I started it it seemed to idle better but it still stalled (the distributor?) I will buy some new hoses after I buy my 6 months of liability for $450 good price for a sports car
Plus tax is like $5.00 a year

I would chang ehte filter first off and the feul lines they look pretty cracked also get some hose clamps. Spray you linkage with WD40 and you set screws. Also make sure your choke cable is moving freely. Try spraying some WD40 in the cable sleeve. You might have to break down and pull the carbs off get a rebuild kit and do it that way.

WD40!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the problem was that I was starving the engine from fuel because the back fuel pump does not work. we took a gas can and hooked up right where the fuel line turns from rubber to where it turns solid. It runs perfect off of the gas can.

yesterday my dad and I put in a new fuel pump and filter and some new fuel lines. today we installed a manual switch for the rear fuel pump because the harness dosent work between the rear where the harness from the fuelpump comes through the floor and the relays. Today I drove the z around the hood' and every 200 feet it would stall because the engine was not getting gas. I think there is somthing wrong with the gas tank because the rear fuel pump ran real hard and then after about 3 minutes fuel got to the rear pump and the pump got real quiet when it got some gas to pump. Where can I find a gas tank for my 260z? they don't have one on zcarparts.com.
yesterday I took my driver seat to a muffler shop (Andy's) and got it welded for $15 GREAT PRICE.
