intercooler piping

intercooler piping
I am running into a few problems with plumbing in my new intercooler. I bought a Isuzu NPR intercooler (huge) and mounted it in front of my radiator. The thing dwarfs the radator. I need advice on how to run the tubing for this thing, because it is really hard to find 2 1/2 rubber hose to make couplings. Does anyone know where you can get this for cheap? Also, when I run the piping from the passenger side over to the intake, it will hit the fan. There isn't room for an aftermarket puller fan to fit in between the radator and the water pump and I don't really want one hanging out the front. Any ideas? Thanks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: intercooler piping
I've had some good luck finding silicone hose couplings. This one shop that bolts on turbo kits and such had a couple used ones laying around and I've found some used ones in the junk yard off of turbo cars.
You could find large radiator hose to cut up for a temp fix.
If you haven't already you will want to install one or two low profile electric fans. This will give you more room to run a 2 1/2" pipe between the radiator and front of the engine. I've seen it done before, you may have to go with a smaller fan than you had planned for.
Show us pictures as soon as you've got it installed. If you think it'll be too much work then sell it to me at a good deal :-)

Re: intercooler piping
I have successfully used the large-gauge coolant hose (designed for stationary gen-sets etc.) on my L24ET & L28ET conversions. I have also used the rubber right-angle pieces from the 13BT intercooler plumbing as well.
See my 240Z ride for a photo of the L24ET setup (this used 2" intake plumbing).
This car also had 2x10" Davies Craig puller fans installed.
Things were getting tight on the other side as well, with the AiResearch Intercooler, Earls Oil cooler & trans cooler....

Re: intercooler piping
I guess my first post did leave out some valuable information. I am putting this in a '73 240z. I was suprised at how many responses that I got from this. I'm new to this forum and didn't expect much (bad experiences with other ones) and was really suprised to hear back. Are there any stores on the net that sell 2 1/2" rubber hose? Thanks.

Re: intercooler piping
I Installed a turbo in my 78 Z and the only thing to fix your intercooler problem cheeply that I have found is a large truck supply store.( I.E. peterbilt, kenworth etc.) They carry 2.5 in.Dia. radiator hose. Your fan will have to come off and be replaced with an electric 1 or 2 fan set-up to pull the air needed for the radiator. just pipe the hose between the radiator and the valve cover back to the intake. I used a saab 9000 turbo intercooler and it fit the holes in the radiator support perfectly. Its not pretty but it will be very functional.I hope that this will help good luck......

Re: intercooler piping
Pity you had not seen my webpage about the NPR before you started. Several folks have done this but I believe I might have been the first. Look at the pics in my webpage and the details on what mods need to be done to make it fit. This, of course, is not the only way to do it, but the way I did it and several others who followed.

Re: intercooler piping
Thanks, I remember seeing that site forever ago, but forgot about it when I got my new intercooler. I plumbed the whole thing in with few problems actually. I couldn't do it like you did because I didn't have access to a mandrel bender. I left both outlets of the intercooler as they came and modified my radiator instead to make it fit. I narrowed my radiator where the tubes hit and it worked pretty well. That way I could still have both of my interior vents too. I'll have a picture posted on here tomorrow. Thanks for all your help!

Re: intercooler piping
Thanks, but I already have the thing already plumbed in. If you check my profile, you can see the pics on how I did it. I kinda laughed when you said to go to my "local turbo" shop. The only people that work with turbos would be Caterpiller and John Deer. I guess if I went there, I could really go big!!
