More Alternator Upgrades
Hi,
All this talk about upgrading the alternator to one mentioned on ideal-z.com motivated me to upgrade my IR Z alternator in my 510. I went with the 85 Maxima unit. But, it is rated at 90 amps and has a serpintine(sp?) pulley. I figured the one for the 95 240sx needed a pully swap anyway, so I bought it and when I went to put the v-pulley on, noticed it wouldn't work. The maxima alternator has the cooling fan built-in and the v pulley is designed for and external cooling fan. Just wonder if anyone has went with this alternator and, was a new pulley used, or some kind of spacer? I tried washers, but they won't work either because the serpintine pulley has a sleeve that sets in the casing a little. Not sure I've explained it good enough, but this alternator was $100 cheaper than the 240sx alternator which may have same problem. Any info on sources for pulleys or other solutions would be greatly appreciated. I'd also like to stick with nissan, the GM route is a very last resort.
Thanks and Enjoy the Ride,
Ben

Re: More Alternator Upgrades
Hi,
I got the one for a 95 240sx to work. The 85 Maxima one had too small of lower mounting bolt holes. 510s with the L16(I have an L20b and drilled it out just in case) had a habit of breaking the lower bolts. So, a trick is to drill the bracket all the way through and use a head bolt(10mm). The 85 Maxima lower mounting holes are for 8mm bolts. The 95 240sx are 10mm. And, the Bosch alternator housing had a big enough hole around the shaft that I could use narrow washers to space the v-pulley. It just took 3 washers. I plan on documenting the changeover and posting on my website someday(www.fun5ten.com). Just need to go to a yard and get the connector, but for now spade lugs will do fine, since the area around them is plastic.
Enjoy the Ride,
Ben
