need help, I think my Z is broken
hey guys, I think my Z is broken. I was driving home, and I took off pretty fast. All the sudden, I heard this loud clunk, and then the car felt ok. I speed shifted into 2nd, and it drove like it should. I then downshifted and then the tranny made a strange whirring sound, similar to the sound you would hear if you were driving a truck, and forgot to push the clutch in when you wanted to put it into gear. I stopped, and took off normal, and the Z clunked, and made the whirring noise again. I don't know exactly what it is, but the clunking noise is coming from right where the e-brake is, and the whirring is coming from the tranny, it sounds. I think I may have broken a u-joint, or f--ked up my differential. Please help! (By the way, my clutch needs to be replaced, but I don't think that's the problem. My u-joints are going out though.)

its something with your driveshaft just as you suspected. Sounds just like my Datsun truck. Its fine as long as I don't downshift and slow down with the engine....
My center carrier bearing is ripped appart, so I guess that causes the 2-piece driveshaft to vibrate when pulled slower by the transmission. I forgot if your 240Z has a 1-piece or 2-piece... but it could be a u-joint or something got thrown out of balance. Maybe your differential has a loose mount and is cocked sideways slightly which throws everything off...

Mine did that on the way to Wyoming it wa a combination of my throw out bearing and my pilot bearing and the front U-Joint was also dry. It cost me 500 to get it fixed, mainly cause I was 800 miles from home. So I had to pay a shop.
So basically I would suspect the whirring nmoise to be a bearing and the clunck to be the U-Joint.
Good luck
