NEED HELP!! (kind of long)
Alright I am posting this up for my friend. He has a 1980 280zx and we are having a problem making it run. The problem is when you turn on the car and let go of the clutch in neutral it dies. If you put it in gear and try to move it forward it'll move a little and die out aswell (kind of like when you have the e-brake on). The thing is we first thought it was the tranny that locked up, so we replaced it. It worked, but a few month later it did it again. My friend bought another one and this one lasted only 4 months. Now it happened again to this other tranny, and im starting to think that its something else, but dont know what. I think its kind of weird for it to happen to three different transmissions. Does any one know what it could be? If any one could help me I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you

Re: NEED HELP!! (kind of long)
What exactly do you mean by die out? Like the engine dies? Or the car stops moving? Could be your diff??? Have you checked that yet to see if it's ok? If it's not the tranny, it's something else, there's no reason that you should go through 3 in such a short time. Or maybe your Clutch Master cylinder? I have no idea really, but those were the first 2 things I thought of. Maybe someone else can give you better advice.

what i mean is car completely turns off... we believe the differential is ok, because we turned the driveshaft and the wheels turn easily, by hand... any other advice??

Re: NEED HELP!! (kind of long)
If your trannys are truly seizing up, then replace your pilot bearing. That is the bearing that is in the end of the crankshaft that the pilot shaft of the tranny slides into. If that is bad, then the pilot shaft is free to move up and down and will wipe out a tranny quick. Hope that helps ya.

Re: NEED HELP!! (kind of long)
I don't know if the throw out bearing and pilot bushing are the same thing, but if your car is making a chirping/tweeting sound while the car is just sitting in neutral idling, it could be bad. It prevented my clutch from disengaging all the way and made my car stall plenty o' times. It was on my '71 510.
(your throw out bearing could be bad is what I meant)

Re: NEED HELP!! (kind of long)
The pilot and the throw out bearing are totally different things. I believe that on the Z cars, that the pilot bearing is just a brass bushing. Some cars use ball or needle bearings though. If they go bad, then trannys go bad like nothing else.

Re: NEED HELP!! (kind of long)
Well I got the pilot bushing and hopefully install it this weekend. We replaced the clutch (disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing), and also the Master and slave cylinder. So I guess we'll install the pilot bushing and take the tranny to get checked. And hopefully it'll be running strong again.
