I'm not that much of a n00b. lol I tested the spray on a spare door I had long before I ever aimed it in the direction of my car. Again I feel compelled to point out that THE COLOR COATED EVENLY. lol The clear likely simply wasn't applied heavy enough.

None of the paint required any reducing or mixing. Directions said I could if I wanted to, but considering 2 quarts of paint covered the car, I clearly didn't need to.

And frankly, Eric, I'm getting tired of you **** talking my first ever paint job, as well as my car overall... I'm happy with it, regardless of how you feel about it. At least I own a Z. I appreciate all your help, I truly do, but that doesn't entitle you to a "do some **** talking for free" card.

oh **** son^^^!!!

if i may randy, i might guess that if there is an issue present in the clear coat, it's from too narrow of a fan, or too much air pressure, and not from too little material. judging by the frequency of the texture, it looks like the air was displacing the material after it hit the surface, rather than the finer texture you get from spraying too lean. but, i can't see it so well.

i'm a bit more impressed with the job knowing that the color went down smooth. it'll be a lot easier to flatten out now than it would be if the color had texture too.

still, good job man. i by no means would talk **** about your car.

i think you mistake my lightheartedness as **** talking. the ONLY THING I EVER disputed with you was the color scheme (but not the actual colors), and now that it is done i even said it looks better then i thought it would. i never ever said anything about how the spray job turned out or anything or that i had any issues with your color choices cause i don't at all. find one post that does "**** talk" your painting. other than when i tried to say i don't think the scheme will look that great and suggested my thoughts on it.

if you think my previous post was anything bad it wasn't i was only repeating what you said to me. you said your going cheap on it with the no mix duplicolor setup, and just the fact that i had to repeat that back to you yet knowing the amount of work it takes to paint and that you put into painting since i have been there done that made me laugh, seemed like an oxymoron. why all butt hurt? and the reason i asked is cause you said the color sprayed on good but not the clear, and alot of times you can use the wrong amount of reducer (even if it is the suggested amount) and it will orange peel like yours for no reason. i would look at orange peel as more of a drying process flaw, if it was raised where it is more like a sand paper like texture or running, then i would suggest spray patterns fault.

also, i have been having a shitty day, so i was ready to freak out on a mother****er especially since i felt like i was being accused of being shitty towards you, when i never once was, but just not worth it since i def appreciate your friendship, plus your a local S30 buddy with a turbo. unless you truly treated it like a piece of **** i could never really talk **** about it. i think you need to read more into my personality with the words i use and not just take them at face value like i am any other internet personality

Hey now, duplicolor was used on my car by the previous owner. It laid down just fine, though he was still an idiot for other reasons.

If you didn't use a binary-type paint I think it came out very well, especially if it was your first try.

I still haven't laid down a decent clear myself.

Well I apologize for taking it the wrong way. With the comments about my wheels, flares, paint scheme, and reminding me that I was being cheap (despite my best attempts to make an inexpensive paint job turn out nice), I felt insulted. I'm doing the best I can with the car, given that I'm trying to save up for a move back to Chicago (where the rent is 3x what I pay now) within the next few months at the same time, and I hope that people, in general, understand that. Also, only having a couple days a time, spread out often months apart, makes me anxious to get as much as possible done in a short time span. I wish I could've spent another day working on it (probably could've finally drove it), but I had one night to lay the color and clear down, and I had to clean up and head home the next afternoon.

And the reason I think it wasn't heavy enough was that the directions said to apply a heavier final clear coat, and I hardly turned up the flow at all. But in retrospect, none of the clear coats were looking very smooth. Oh well... what's done is done. Like I said, I'll talk to my neighbor about where to go from there. If that means sanding down and re-clearing, oh well (I'll hate the taping process, but I'll do it). Hopefully it just means a little light sanding and buffing.

its cool randy, and like i said in those other comments, i love flares, and the wheels you are using are fine, i've used stock ZX rims on almost all my S30's so who am i to judge, i just said with those wheels and at stock height, i would go flare-less for the time being. save them and plug the holes. but you then brought to my attention that the metal under them was crap which i couldn't tell so i stopped after that. anything i say is just from personal insight not to scorn or ridicule. if it ever is, it will definitely sound that way.

and i am well aware of your scheduled visits and that you are on a budget income, hell, im the king of budget S30 builds haha. that's why i always have so much to add/say, cause i have been there and done that 3 times or more haha.

Wow, never would have predicted this thread going this way lol.

I'd get your car braking so you can enjoy it. You can always re-visit the paint while you drive it and have fun with it.

woah, just cause i have taken alot of V-cards doesn't mean im into it. im into the whole i know she isn't a ***** idea, like if i wre tying to make a serious relationship, but in my experience i HATE taking V-cards. cause for one, it's never fun the first time, they **** up my sheets with blood and it hardly goes anywhere since they are all "OMG IT HURTS slow slow" or something. plus there is always the possibility of their mind flipping a switch and they think omg what am i doing, but don't say anything, and then resent you or sex for a few year. or forever. ok that last one only happened twice, one with a way young girl and plus i ended up boning her friend (still in highschool me senior she freshmen) because she showd my friends her **** so i that's how i got even/ the other was a long time gf and then i dumped her a few months after cause she got all psycho. so i guess it's not without cause.haha

Clear coat can be a bitch. I have done several paint jobs where the color is beautiful, smooth and sexy but then the clear just Fs it all up. Clear coat will come with practice

why were you set on going base clear? with older cars that stay inside, i like to use single stage. you can get a lot better product down for the same price as going with a cheap base/clear system. the clear is only completely necessary when the car stays outside, though it does add a bit of depth to any paint job.

uh, because that car does stay outside. (Albeit, under a cover.) The last two pics are of it in its current natural environment.
