haha no...I can't find a new engine!, and i just got a ticket!.
They say i abandoned the car, and i will get a ticket for $50.00+ and they might tow it. =( I am planing to sell this one, and buy another Z that works. I live in a apartment, so the car is parked outside in the streets.

Re: Parting out 260Z 1974
good idea, i just pushed it down about 30 feet. THIS CAR IS HEAVY! is it because of the drive shaft? Well yeah, i guess i will be doing this for a few days, but i am still considering on selling it. If i am not able to find a new engine, or if i am able to find a 280zx for a cheap price.

Does the car crank over or start? Is it carbed or injected? Maybe the points have just gone bad if it's carbed, or check the dwell on it? Bad chassis ground anywhere? I'm just tossing ideas at the moment. Maybe these will give some more places to check. Good luck.

Yeah it started 4 times, and 10 minutes later it didn't.
It cranks, the starter motor and battery are still good. Its a carb. I am looking for a electronic Disturbtor, and i plan to downgrade to a SU carb.

Tony I believe I may have some answers. Your car won't run if you've been toying with your tacho because the Z tacho was connected to the ignition system it's strange but when I wanted to replace mine I took it out and tried driving without it and it wouldn't stay on the car dies 2 seconds later. It will stay on if u hold the key in the start position. So whatever u did just plug your tach back in and she should be right.
Nissan changed the carbs because of the US emission controls that were introduced late 73 there. That's why early 240z's are the best because they had the E31 head which had the largest compression and more power but more pollution. The 280z was fuel injected and therefore managed to pump out more power using even more emission controls. It is important to know that if a 240z has an L28 in it running on early carbs it will be alot faster than any other early Z. People are often confused and believe the L28 isn't as good an engine.

Re: Parting out 260Z 1974
Oh yeah, i forgot about the SMOG law. So thats why they were not able to bring the 240 carb into the 260. When i unpluged the connector to the disturbtor to tap my tach wire. all my gauges died. But the car still started a few times. Then when i gave up, i pulled out the tach wire and pluged everything back to normal, the car stopped running. All my wires are connected, i dont know how come it wont start anymore. is there a way i can check if there is still compression in the engine?

Re: Parting out 260Z 1974
When I was in college - broke and stupid - I used to test for spark by holding the wire near the block. It's quite a shock, but nothing so bad that I stopped after my first attempt.
These days a timing light works a lot better.
The shock is about the same as what you get from a 110 outlet in the house. More then enough to hurt.

Re: Parting out 260Z 1974
mmm, gotta love electricity
In my ragged and dangerous car repairing life, i have :
- arc welded my hand to the chassis accidentally touching a shifter to the positive terminal and chassis at the same time.
- disabled my arm for about 8 hours after pulling a coil lead on a running engine.. (12 inch long blue sparks everywhere...it was on a mitsubishi though so who cares)
- shocked the hell out of myself on a faulty Z31 distributor simply adjusting timing (got the shock THROUGH the plastic dissy cap).
Finally I
- discovered the advantages of having a friend hold the spark plug lead and checking for spark while I crank the engine from the safety of the drivers seat. I knew I had decent spark from the yelp under the bonnet.
Coil sparks hurt a hell of a lot more than individual plug sparks but it's more likely to hold you to the car than throw you anywhere - alot like AC from a wall socket will prevent you from letting go no matter how much you want to.
If I'm checking for the existance of spark now, I just use a timing light. Sometimes you need to pull the leads to check spark quality (my Z31 had a dead coil and was giving crappy orange sparks, replacing it gave me a strong blue one) but I found the easy way was to pull the lead and hold it about half an inch from the dissy cap with an pair of insulated pliers - you should get an arc from the lead to the cap.

No, if it was just numb I wouldn't have minded. The shock was shooting pain all the way up to my shoulder and I was basically unable to move my arm at all for the rest of the day. I ended up putting it in a sling. Was done on a VN Commodore (Buick based 3.8l v6).
