Picked up a 240Z, ditching my ZX
I picked up a 73 240Z this past weekend, a few hundred miles away in Farmington New Mexico. Pretty cheap ($700) and has a few nice things, like triple webers, re-upholstered interior, Enkei model 92 mesh wheels (although they're only 14"). Body looked bad at a glance, but is surprisingly solid. It's been repainted several times, poorly. The paint has been chipping/flaking off to the bare metal & the only corrosion I've been able to find is the exposed steel getting very mild surface rust. The battery tray, frame rails, spare tire well, doglegs, all rust free! It does need some serious work, however. The carbs are WAY out of tune & I imagine in need of rebuild. I'm debating on tossing on another intake I've got lying around with twin DGV's just to be able to drive it around, until I rebuild & tune the triples. Bumpers are gone (dammit!) but has a front lip spoiler. Shocks are completely worn out...as are the rear tires, neither of which I can do anything about until I can find someone to remove the locking lug nuts it has (no key).
My plans are to get it roadworthy, take the body down to bare metal, repaint & make it a fun resto-mod...ZG flares, some decent body mods, badass wheels (eventually). In 1-2 years, get serious with the driveline. I'll be selling off my 82 slicktop to fund getting the 240 started.
Here's a few pics.

I'm downsizing my garage, as I don't NEED 4 drains on my wallet at this time...I can always pick up another Mustang or 280ZX in the future, they're not rare or anything. Might wind up getting rid of my 240SX as well...we'll see.
Shes philippino? Don`t marry her. They are all crazy!! Trust me I know!
Just kidding, best of luck and nice score.

i hate you with a passion.... syke, but i'd like a 240z.... they are the best looking and lightest weight. hard to find.... is the 280zx that much better than the 280z as far as brakes, suspension "shmakel shmakel" go?

I'm going to try to hold onto my 240SX, not sure how it will turn out though. Damn race gas is EXPENSIVE!!! Almost $10/gallon for 114 octane here! I REALLY need to quit screwing around & install my methanol/water injection kit. It's not a very easy car to drive daily either...fully caged, stitch/seam welded body, stiff coilovers, solid aluminum subframe bushings, no stereo, roll up windows, no a/c, gutted, triple plate clutch with 2-way diff make starting out from a stop & low speed turns "interesting"...it's all worth it though when you push the car to its limits. Here's a few build pics of it. I originally built it in a 180SX when I was stationed in Japan. Brought back all my parts with me when I moved to the US. I'll document the Z build here as well. The good thing so far is all my rust rubs right off, clean!
Still have a ways to go with the 240SX...was going to repaint it, but it got too cold here. Going to wait for better weather. I've got rear overfenders, side skirts, rear bumper & a wing to toss on with the paint/body work.

Upgrade your brakes for about $250 to the Toyota 4 pot vented rotor setup, see hybridz.org or classiczcars.com for details. Saw this car on EBay and it looked like a good deal, no moisture in NM so you only have to worry about dry rot. Pics didn't survive the sec'y here at the Deid but if your triples are Mikunis you can pick up a free PDF manual at either of the sites above by searching for Mikuni. If not, pick up a copy of "How to modify your Nissan and Datsun OHC engine" by Frank Honsowetz, well worth the money. If you can enjoy driving without A/C or power everything you're in for a treat.
