Rear end clunking
My 74 260z makes terrible clunking:
>When i let the clutch out during changes up and down, worse on changes up
> When i accelerate in a low gear and then back off (a massive banging noise follows)
>Also on take off.
I have spent days and loads of money trying to tighten up the rear end including various new rubber bushes and getting the diff overhauled.
It's driving me nuts and if i can't fix it am going to get rid of it which is a shame because it's a great car with a bullet proof L26 motor.
Any help/ideas would be great.

The most common cause is worn out mustache bar bushings. That or you have a worn out u-joint in your half shafts or drive shaft. If you don't have a problem with vibration, its probably the mustache bar bushings. My 280Z had the exact same problem and that was the problem.

Rear end clunk
Thanks Gary,
It's not a universal joint because i've put new ones in and repacked all the old ones which were in near new condition less than a year ago.
I am not familiar with the mustache bar and it's bushes. Is that its official name they would come under in the manual, where are these bushes located??????

I'm not really sure if the manual refers to it as a "mustache bar". Its the rear most mount for your differential and attaches to the differential cover and then to the car. The suspect bushings are the ones where the bar mounts to the car. I replaced mine with urethane ones and that solved my problem.

Ooops, overlooked that one. The ones I've seen don't clunk until it wears out the mustache bar bushings also, allowing the front of the diffy to swing up under acceleration. I've seen a nice replacement on Hybridz.org I believe that mounts over the top to the diff in the front to stop the upward motion. I need to build one of those for my turbo car

It's worth keeping!
the dude is right! The diff clunks when you let off because it sticks up when you accelerate and when you decel it slams back down over the rubber. Try prying up on the front of the diff with a crowbar. It should move up only a little and recover when you let loose. Motorsport Auto sells them for $44.02. While you have it out you might as well do the urethane bushing replacements too. Be sure to let us all know how you make out. Good luck.
