Shaking steering wheel at higher speeds
Hi
my steering wheel has been shaking for a while now, and am getting P&*&d off with it.... only happens when I'm going over 80kph... before that its fine...
I've got a urathane steering bushings, all new suspension, new tyres, and perfect alignment so I'm not sure what to do..
is it the rack or what

Re: Shaking steering wheel at higher speeds
yeah tire balance check if the tire is good cuz on our car both tires had like a little bubble thingy on the insede of the tire so that shook the car like hell

Re: Shaking steering wheel at higher speeds
I've changed my ball joints recently...
I'll get the tyres balanced next week
see if that solves the problem

Re: Shaking steering wheel at higher speeds
Yeha I've had that one before. Get your wheels balanced first. Normally the tyre shop will tell you 45,000 things wrong with your front end.
Its its not your wheel balance, it'll be your tie-rod ends. They are about $45 each (about $35 trade price) and its an easy job to do yourself. Just make sure you get your wheels aligned straight after it. I paid for one of mine to be replaced and the bastards changed $95. The other one id did myself which cost me $35 for the part...its a 15 minute job each side if you know what you are doing.

u could also try to retorque your steering rack bushings. i've also seen that sometimes the incorrect lug nuts r used and have caused the same problem...

Re: Shaking steering wheel at higher speeds
If you can, take your car to a shop that offers on-the-car dynamic balancing. Many tire shops do static balancing, with the tire off the car, which may be ok for lower speeds. With the dynamic balance set-up, the wheel balance can be checked/corrected at various speeds and you get a better balance job.

Re: Shaking steering wheel at higher speeds
I've already got new tie rods, ball joints, and all new urathane bushings for the front end so I know that it isn't that stuff...
I'll try titening the nuts on the steering rack bushing.. maybe that might help... bad thing is i hafto get to the freeway to test if it works or not... oh well

Re: Shaking steering wheel at higher speeds
Zpeed,
What kind of rims are those? Tire balancing is the first best place to look, and 1tuffZ's suggestion was also very good.
One thing that happened to me and I ask about rims. I once bought these 15" rims from a 510, and the front rims would not mount properly because they were made for a 510 i guess. Anyways the 240Z hub was bigger then the 510 hub so they did not mount properly. I thought they did but this was the source for my high speed shimmy. Its a good thing I found and put back the old rims before a wheel flew off or soemthing worse eh?

Re: Shaking steering wheel at higher speeds
The rims are bathurst Globes,
I bought them with the car, so i am under the assumption they are made for the car, the lugs don't come loose at all, so its no problem
i tried tighting the bolts on the steering rack, they were tight enough for no movement when i tried wiggling it, but i tightend them alot more, see if that helps

Re: Shaking steering wheel at higher speeds
I've got a problem like that too....Sometimes the car is straight as an arrow and other times I have to shake the steering to settle it down. Can the steering box be tightened or adjusted? All other parts are new or seem to be fine.

Re: Shaking steering wheel at higher speeds
mine doesn't do that... it just shakes... doesn't move the actaul car or anything, just shakes, it is fine steering wise and everything

Re: Shaking steering wheel at higher speeds
i tightened up the bolts on the steering bushings, and it has helped it a bit/.. but I've been really busy with work and school this week so next week I'll get to the root of the problem and solve it
