Speaker selection
Hiya all,
Having no radio or music whatsoever in my car is starting to drive me nuts, so I plan on installing a stereo very soon and had a few questions on speakers. Ok first I have this weird speaker right next to the feet that was installed before I bought the car and they fit 3 1/2 to 4 inch speakers. There are holes in the door panel, what size speaker usually goes there?
Now finally anyone have any recommendations on speakers, One that is fairly priced I guess all of them are pretty good but all I'm looking for is something that just sounds good. Also since these speakers are probably both right next to each other in the front should I work on getting a pair with vocals and one with more Bass?
Well if I haven't already confused you any recommendations or advice would be appreciated!

Re: Speaker selection
a pair of 6" boston accoustic 3 ways in door panels, a single boston 10 in the spare tire well, bostons arent too overpriced, and with a little extra power, sound really well.
you might find that you want to add more mids/highs to the rear area of the car for fill, i remember doing a post months ago on this same subject, i put a set of seperates in the kicks, and a set of 3 ways in the rear strut towers in my car, but that is all gone now, since my cage mounts or blocks where everything was placed.......so keep that in mind too, just in case you might ever feel the need to go faster.

Hey yuichi, bostons are good speakers. If you have the money I highly reccomened you listen to a pair of kenwood excellon speakers. I just pulled my MB quarts out of my truck in favor for them. They were somewhat expensive, but sounded better than my MBs did.
Sub is a good idea in a Z, seems to me that exhaust drone kills off alot of your bass.
Evanz
PS, im not a big fan of rear fill unless its done right, or you arent going for straight imaging. My orginal system included 6x9 in the rear too. In a z, if you layout the front right, rear fill really shouldnt be nesicary. Same applies to a center fill.
Well while i have it apart i might as well........

Yuichi...
Okay bigger is USUALLY better. To understand you really need to go to your local audio shop and listen to the different sizes. Midbass is much better out of 6.5 speakers and can be a tad flat on the low end out of 5.25. Im sure you dont understand what i mean, but if you listen you will understand.
I can tell you a million differnent kinds of speakers to buy. But ultimately, whats falls into your price range and sounds good to you will make you happiest. The best advice is go to out and listen to your hearts content, and find what you like and buy it!! The excelon i referred you too is expensive... but they also sound GREAT. and if you really dont care that much they would be overkill im sure
Good luck buddy- Evan
PS yuichi, i have one more piece of advice. Radioshack has relabled all their equipment to say RCA. They make a small bookshelf speaker thats a metal cabinet for like 75 each. They are very small, sound really good and are good for outdoors. I have a pair on my deck for a couple years with no problems. They sound great and you dont have to cut into your interior!! (and if you get new speakers later you can use em in your house

Re: Yuichi?
Ghostz,
I went with what Evan recommended, was some bookshelf speakers from Radio shack Heheh pretty cheesy but they sound decent. When I get a little money I think I'm just going to install speakers in the door panles of my 240Z since they hole is already there;/ and get a speaker panel in the back And put some tweeters in the fresh air vents
I'm not a big stereo person, I'm just really happy I have music in my car, so I'm still pretty happy, but those are my future plans

Sounds wicked, you know, I have some REALLY (ok had, my Z got totaled) expensive speakers in that car, both in the front and back...I also have a 95 Chevy Blazer that I got for my wife, she is not a big stereo fan, just wanted something to listen to, and the stock speaks' were shot, I went with the TARGET brand, 30.00$ for the whole truck, and you know whats funny? The sound is great!! maybe not as crisp or loud as my Z had, but hey, 30 bucks went a long way! I guess I'm saying that unless you are extremely picky you don't need those pricey speakers to sound good and enjoy, besides with all that stereo, you can't here that sweet engine talkin to you.................

Re: Yuichi?
Just a quick suggestion if you want to get some better speakers for less money and know what you're looking for, check Ebay. I just got some MB Quarts that were about 3 years old but still sealed in the factory box for about 150 for a set of 6.5" separates. These retail for 4-500 bucks a pair if you go with the current equivalent models. The 3 way bostons discussed above that my local shop wanted 600 someodd bucks for cash and carry usually go for 3-400/set. Now granted, you have to know what you're looking for, but if you do you can get some pretty good deals.

Re: Yuichi?
Personally, I'd go to http://www.ubid.com. They are far less risky of a source since they are like a last buy/close out type place. And they have great deals almost all the time. And most of the time, they sell stuff that's only a year old. Some of it is remanufactured, some of it is unsold stock.
As with e-bay, make sure you know the lowest price for that particular item before you bid. I can't tell you how many times I've seen items on e-bay (300ZX keys for instance) that go for more than you can buy them for new.
...and from the ashes shall rise a new hope. And it shall be known as "Z". And it will be good.

That works too. Like I said, know what you're bidding on's actual street value, I've seen stuff like the dual SU SSS manifolds for the 4 cyl L series being sold for twice what you can buy them new for from NISMO. I see people do this with Cisco Networking equipment all the time too.

Re: Speaker selection
I'm surprised that on the topic of speakers and subs, nobody mentioned Crutchfield. I got two MTX 1600 12's from them a few weeks ago WITH a box for $200, new. They also have good deals on 4", 5.25", 6", 6x9".. etc. I don't have the current mag around so I can't give you a price. I remember Infiniti Kappas (which sound pretty darn good) being on sale because Infiniti came out with a new model.
You guys probably wouldn't believe this, but I saw some 6x9's at WAL mart.... nib... for $50 (yes, a pair).. and one was a 3-way sony xplod :-\.. and the other a pioneer impp ... I guess walmart really did roll back the prices this time... who would have known.
Personally, I like Polk for Tweeters and Mids, Pioneer is probably my second favorite. Most other brand name 3-ways sound just as good too. I figure its worth the extra $30-50 to get a decent pair.. the real money you spend is on the head unit and amp. Man those can get costly for good features. I guess it depends on what kind.. and how much.. of music you listen to as to how your selection goes. I listen to mostly older stuff, so 2 10's (subs) is all my Z would ever need. I'd rather spend a bit more on the tweeters and mids, get better vocal accentuers, more detailed highs. Its kind of tough for me to imagine a 240 with 2 15's blaring ghetto rap. I guess that's just me tho. My $.02.. Happy Holidays all
