Re: steering shimmy
mine does it at all speeds constantly which i think rules out the tires cause at low speeds the damping in the shocks should take up the imbalence only at high speeds are the harmonics correct to effect the steering from the imbalance of tires

Re: steering shimmy
On my car, it has a very suddle shimmy that suddenly gets stronger with a slight press of the brake pedal. Of course, I know my front rotors are a little warped. Do you think that might be a cause on your car?
Also, if your sway bar bushings are shot, then a little bump in the road may start a shake in your front end that lasts for a few seconds and comes back later. My 280ZX used to do that untill I put new urethane swap bar bushings on front and rear. Tie rod ends can be loose, also the steering rack itself has bushings that hold it down. Be sure those are not totally loose.

Re: steering shimmy
thanks bleachZee it does seem to start if i hit a bump i was going to rebuild the front end anyway with eurathane bushings well see if that helps this might sound dumb but how hard is it to work on the suspension front and rear on these cars ive worked on all kinds of cars before but never a z

Re: steering shimmy
I don't know how hard it is. I have ONLY worked on my Z's front sway bar. well, and my Datsun 620 which is very easy. I think this is like any other car with coil springs. A RWD car has less on the front end than a FWD car of course. The Z's sway bar was a little tricky at one point. You have to really squeeze the bar down to get the last bushing and nut on the top of your end link.
As far as replacing springs or struts... I've never done it, but I really need to soon. My rear springs are saging and the rear struts are a little bouncy. Soon I hope to get some 1 inch lowering springs that are tighter and then buy some new struts all around. That should tighten it up enough for me.
