as the turbo turns
hey.....new guy here. i have a 74 260 that i'm dropping an l28et into. i got a killer deal on a low-mile engine and an even better deal on a low- mile turbo. so, you may ask, what's my problem? well, the guy i bought that turbo from did'nt point out that it was a z31 turbo until it was across the good old usa in my hands. $#@!**&@!!!! so... i've heard that these will mount up and work just fine on my engine. anyone done this? and if so, how the hell do i?

Re: as the turbo turns
nah.... i know what i need and have most of it. the only thing i'm having trouble with is this turbo. the flanges match up... just seems like the compressor is about 45 to 90 degrees cockeyed. seems simple enough if not for this mystery bar that seems to make adjusting the angle a frickin nightmare. come on... i can't be the only idiot who attempted this!!!

Re: as the turbo turns
Is the turbo a T25 from a later 300zx? The early model Z31's had the same turbo as the 280ZX's, except on some they came water cooled for the center bearing. I think the thing in your way is the actuator rod. You might have to relocate the actuator itself in order to get the turbo to fit.

Re: as the turbo turns
yeah, i'm pretty sure that's what that is. forgive me... i've only worked on carbed z's before. it's a big step up for me to all this modern technology. (oh, the b.s. that flows...) but what is this v-clamp of which you speak? i'm looking at this thing right now and at risk of sonding like a complete moron, i don't see no v-clamp. i assure you guys, i swear i'm not a jackass.

Re: as the turbo turns
well, iknow it's a garrett.... but i've been searching this turbo over and i can't figure out which model. as for relocating the actuator... any suggestions? or should i just make it easy on myself and get a different wastegate? i stuck a pic on here so you might be able to see what i'm dealing with.

Re: as the turbo turns
The turbo from a Z31 will fit the 280ZXT exhaust manifold. You will have to loosen the bolts on the backside of the compressor housing and "reclock" the compressor housing to point the proper direction for your application. As for the wastegate actuator, I always use the stock 280ZXT unit as it is already made to fit with the turbo in this configuration. If this is not an option for you, you can always redrill the actuator mount to fit the new position of the wastegate relative to the compressor housing.
Both the 280ZXT and 300ZXT use a Garret T3 turbo and will interchange with little difficulty. I usually swap to the later turbo on my 2.8 engines due to the later T3's having water cooling passages in the cartridge.
