well just got some good news..
I finally got my car back from the "family" mechanic who did just enough to get it on the road. After waiting 4 months to finally have my Z, I go to pick it up and he says I need to get my SUs rebuilt. So after a long Sat. of trying to tune them i decided to take her to a pro, so off to Z Speed Auto in NJ. Just talked to John, the owner, and he told me i don't have aL26, i have a 2.8 from a zx w/a P90 head but square port headers and a bad fuel pump. Now comes the options. I can swap to a N42 head with or w/o a perf. cam and new manifold, etc. or stick with the P90 and go to round ports. He said that we can get it to push roughly 220hp, what to do? money is set aside but for the whole car not to blow on the engine right now.. but i could manage if i did drop it on the engine. need help, rough decision.
thanks,

Re: well just got some good news..
You lucky guy, you already have an L28 with a modern head. Not sure what you mean by putting round ports on a P90 though, I thought the P90 came with fixed square exhaust ports that are considered to flow better than the earlier round ports?
Anyway, I'm in a similar position with my Z at the moment. The temptation to immediately go for more hp is very strong, but I think I'll take a more broad view of the project. My preference would be to sort out the suspension, brakes and body problems before attacking the motor. Just do enough on the motor to get it running reliably.

This is what I did..
If you have it running for now just put the money aside and use it when you need it.
Then try an plan out your upgrades along the way. What I have found is that if you rush into things too fast you end up wasting more money than its worth.
Put a chart together of all the things you plan to do to the car (I bet a strong new engine is in there somewhere atleast it was for me)
Then just take it one step at a time =)

Re: This is what I did..
I've been developing a plan for a while now which leaves the engine till last - damnit. The problem is I don't know whether I should stick with the L series or go for one of those imported RB motors (I'm thinking RB25).
Either way it leaves me with a fair wait before I can go out and embarass all the Honda boys.
