The "oil things" on your carbs are dampers to smooth out the engine performance. The piston and spring assembly is there to prevent the air piston (the big one with the needle in it) from fluttering as the accelerator is suddenly depressed/released. The air piston has to "work" against the dampening provided by the oil moving around the damper piston inside the small "depression chamber".
The Haynes manual suggests using SAE 20 engine oil in the dampers, but any good light oil will do. You might surf around the various Z-car web sites for more info. Owner recommendations vary widely - I've even seen posts from folks who used transmision fluid. A heavier oil will increase the damping effect.

If you want to be a purist about filling, there is a "full mark" on the shaft above the oil piston. I just fill mine until the oil is at, or oveflowing, the top when the piston is inserted. Too much oil is not a problem, too little is.

Holley carbs on a z?! WHAT?! lol i'm sorry I just really don't like that set up. But if you want to burn some money on that set up. You can get the 4 barrel manifold from MSA. www.zcarparts.com i think its like 400 bucks or something like that, and they ofcourse you gotta get a holley.
Why do that when you can get nice redone SU's? and best of all tune them yourself. Check out www.ztherapy.com
don't tell me those don't look nice, and they run great on inline 6's. if your 74 260Z is stop you must have the SMOG flattop carbs which are a pain. I would seriously consider SU's non smog type before you invest in holleys. I had a friend make that mistake.

actually my carbs are fine, i just thought a single 4 barrel would really free up ALOT of clutter under the hood and make it so much easier to work on. i wasnt referring to dual 4 barrels, that would solve nothing.
