Who Out There Drag Races?
Norm and I are avid drag racers, but I was curious as to who else out there is active, what times are you running and with what setup? If you have aspirations, what goal would you like to reach.

Re: Who Out There Drag Races?
Scottie! Just a 73-240Z here. No V8.......but have run a 14.5 with a high comp L28 (whatever 225psi is)....a 0.490/290 cam....triple webers......5spd.....R200 3.9 diff. Actually, the 14.5 run was on a R180-4.11.
I have been running a 2" exhaust for 20yrs......."they" say that going to 2.5 should buy me low 14's. You think?
I don't like the price of 116 leaded "barrel gas" from Sunoco Racing.......but if I go to 2.5" exh....and drop my comp to about 10.7......you think the setup should still be OK? I know Norm runs around that level......but his cam is milder......probably a good thing?

Re: Who Out There Drag Races?
Scottie,
Jim over in Tampa. May be going to DeSoto this Saturday. I would like to change the rearend first, it has been making a very loud clunck. My last trip to the strip netted me a 12.95 @ 113.2 in full street trim, heck we didn't even let the car cool off any from the drive down.
Sorry you didn't make it to the car show. It was great with about 30 Z's showing up. I took plenty of pictures and will post them when they are developed. Almost toasted my engine on the way down. My wife removed and cleaned the floormats the night before. Well when she put them back they weren't in right and the gas pedal got stuck on the floor the next day. I had let my brother drive down and he was pretty quick in getting the throttle unstuck. Unfortanetly, about half an hour later on the way down we started to hear one of the rocker arms making a loud noise. We adjusted that at the show but thought we had heard a rod knock. Luckily it turned out to be the intercooler piping hitting the radiator support. Thank Goodness!
Still planning on the Gainesville event, but I'll probably only run in brackets due to their rules. Hope to see ya there,
Jim

Re: Who Out There Drag Races?
My 60' times are really sorry, mostly around 2.1. This is mostly due to the tires 225/50/15. The car usually either bogs down or lights the tires up all first gear. I need to find a happy medium. We'll see how the drag radials do. My neighbor has run a 1.71 60' with a MSD two step. The funny thing is that he only ran a 12.99 @111.8. Hopefully we're good to go for Gainesville.

Re: Who Out There Drag Races?
Scottie,
The compression (225 - 237psi) is aroun 12:1. I mix the 110 or 116 octane about 50/50 with Sunoco 94 to keep it happy.
Been running headers 6-1 through a 2" pipe, and 2" reverse flo muffler all these yrs. The 14.556 run @ 95.7mph was also only 28deg adv. Didnt have fuel mix right....could'nt go further.
Have run higher advance, low 30's.....not much diff.
60ft - 2.319sec
330ft - 6.440sec
1/8ET - 9.799sec @75.75mph
1/4ET - 14.556 @95.7
May have mentioned earlier, cam is 0.490/290deg, triple webers 34mm chokes, 81 5spd, 3.9diff. (was a r180-4.11 that run day tho).
Tires...streets....215-60/15's. Car weighs 2750 or so with me in it.

Re: Who Out There Drag Races?
George,
I bet you must have some fun on the street with that car especially against stock 5.0s. You are losing a lot with that slow 60' time. If you could get that 60' down below 2.0, you have the potential to get down to 14.0 and that is hauling.
Where are you located and what do you pay for 116-octane?

Re: Who Out There Drag Races?
Scottie, located just east of Toronto. My mech has a Sunoco rep, who delivers to either his garage or mine. The 110 or 116 leaded were close on price. About $525 Cdn last yr, withjout the $30 barrel deposit. Worked out to about $2.50Cdn per liter...so, x 4.55 per Cnd gal, x 3.8 per US gal, and then the exchange rate. Mixed 50/50....I get 102-105 octane.
When mixed with pump 94, and reasonable gas mileage.....it's worth it so long as I have gas on hand. (Always carry a gallon or 2 on board just in case). I compare the extra cost (since you have to use gas anyway) to a small, annual "performance fee". A bigger exhaust will help :-)
Alot of the 5.0's here are souped.......hard to tell what you are up against until you either win, hang in, or eat rubber dust. (The NOS ones are deadly!)

Re: Who Out There Drag Races?
I do not know how well tuned you have the car, but just from the timeslip, it has the potential to run 13s easy. You are giving away AT LEAST .5 just from the slow launch. If you are serious about running the car to its potential, you need to address that. When I was running the L28T, I started out with solid u-joints in the halfshafts and never had any problems but I was not running real sticky tires. I then upgraded to 280ZXT CVs with an adaptor that I designed and that is the ticket for running hard with peace of mind even with sticky tires.
Glad to see you out there having fun.

Re: Who Out There Drag Races?
You said not to mention the auto trans so I wont go there . The easiest gain would be to improve the 60' time and like I told George, getting your 60' below 2.0 could gain you .4-.5. I noticed you have a 3100 stall so what was the problem with the launch? Tire spin? If I was looking to improve the time, I would swap out the 3.54 for a 3.90, get some sticky tires and take advantage of that stall to get the 60' down to about 1.90. I think the car could dip into the 15.20s.

Re: Who Out There Drag Races?
I went to the track last night and hit a best time of
R/T .663
60' 2.254
330 6.544
1/8 10.125
mph 68.91
1000 13.228
1/4 15.891
mph 84.27
So my times are getting better. I would like to get my time to 15.2 also. The problem with the start is that if I spool it up when I let go of the brake it spins for about three feet then stops spining and bogs for about 500rpm.If I go from idle to the floor it helps a little at start but not a finish, so if can get it not to bog it would really help me there.
I already have a 3.9 and have been thinking of going to a 4.11. This car use to be a manuel.
Thanks
Jaosn
P.S. I have been talking with Norm and we have thought of a couple of mods that I will be doing when I get the time.

Re: Who Out There Drag Races?
Scottie,
Are you going to Gainesville next weekend? My brother and I have a plan to lower my times. We are looking for a taller tire. The one on my car runs out of gear about 40 yards shy of the finish line. Hopefully we can pick up a tenth or two. Hope to see ya there!
