Will a 280zx Transmition work with a 240z engine?
I am in the market for a new tranny, and was wondering if a 280zx 5 speed will bolt up to the 240z's 2.4L engine. If not does anyone know where I can get a 4 speed for the 240 near the Austin area, plus the clutch petal assembly and everything. I'm going from auto to manuel.
Thanks guys,
Charles.

Not just the OD, the whole gearset is better, the early 5 speed has ratios that make shift points just odd. Going from 2nd to 3rd gear is goofy in terms of RPM drop, close ratio is just nicer IMO.
When you remove the transmission, you will need to pull off the automatic flex plate, and then remove a spacer that is around the crank. You will see what looks like a pilot bearing, but it sticks out from the back of the crank and in the manual cars it does not, this is your clue that the spacer has to come off. You will need a pilot bearing from a manual car (may as well get a new one of course). Not a great description, and I dont have pictures, but I just swapped an automatic turbo engine into my manual car and this is what needs to be done.

Transmission mount
Regardless of which 5 speed you go with (either the early 78, or 81 - 83's, you need to use the early transmission mount. I found out that I couldn't use the 83 trans mount on an 83 5 speed in a 77 2+2. The 83 trans mount pushes the entire motor & trans. about 3/4"- 1 " forward. To get everything to line up, I just bolted the 77 transmount on the 83 trans, and everything lined up just fine! Hope this helps!
