Honda Seat Install - 280ZX

Honda Seat Install - 280ZX
The seats are 1991 Honda CRX si. The car is a 1982 280ZX 2+2
This install will be the same on 2-seater Z-cars.
I used the ZX seat rails. The rails hold the seat belt so that solves the problem of custom mounting those should I have used other rails.
Remove the seats (14mm) and remove the rails from the bottom of the 280ZX seats. Remove and discard the wire going between the two locks on the sliders. The outside rails that do not have the seatbelt or slider adjuster are the first to work on. Drill out the two rivits holding the 'lock' plate down. Throw out the plate. This will make the outside rails slide with no locking position. The inside rails' lock will be plenty. Also, there are clearance problems with the seats should you try to maintain both locks.
Drill a new hole in the front (or rear) of the rail that has 12" centers. Pic two, #1 mark shows the new hole drilled in the other rail.
Pic 1: Passenger seat installed. Now that I knew what to do, I took pics
Pic 2: (1) new hole drilled 12 inches from the rear mounting hole. The Datsun spacing is 12.5 inches. (2) after removing the wire that connects here, cut off the tab that sticks up. This tab will cause clearance problems under the seat. (lower pic) 1" copper spacer cut in half. This goes under the mounting bolt on the front of both seats
Pic 3: 1/2 inch spacer under front bolts, installed. This spacer goes on both sides on the front of the rail. I put two washers under the rear bolt on all rails. That is about 1/8 inch spacing.
Pic 4: Lines point to areas that were pounded in with a hammer for some additional clearance for the adjuster arm to move.

I put the Scat Pro-Car seats from my 280ZX into my 240Z, but it required a custom adapter to mount them. They're quite a bit wider than the stock S30 seats.

Nicely done. The seats are awesome compared to the old buckets, I dont feel like im sittin in the front seat of my grandmas lincoln anymore.

oh ya, these seats are really nice. They are just the style I wanted; I bought them on eBay and paid a premium price for them last summer. I lost the bid on a couple other sets like it but I eventually got what I wanted!
sometimes you don't get what you want right away but be persistant and keep trying. You will succeed.

Also, I talked the guy that sells the leather covers for these seats on ebay. Right now he only sells the ones with the crx logo on them, but he told me that around July he should have them without the logo. They may not be real leather, but it would be interesting to see what they look like.

Hey I was wondering? If the CRX seats fit in our Zs, then does this mean we can buy bucket seats that were made for CRXs and swap those in too? Like Sparcos, Recaros?
#16
If they're meant to bolt onto the factory CRX seat rails then making them fit into the Z would be the same. But most aftermarket seats are wider then the OEM seats due to the side bolsters. The Z isn't known for having much room for a wide seat.
#17
Well if your going to buy aftermarket seats like that you mine as well get ones that already fit.

Hey bleach, once you cut the locks off the rails will you ever be able to put the Oringinal ZX seats back in or no? And I noticed my CRX seats dont have a roller bar do yours?
#19
Well, looks like im not going to have those shiny new honda seats in my Z. After 2hrs of work I finally go to mount the rails and they are totally diffrerent heights!!! Turns out they werent dam Si seats afterall!!! Just regular ones!!! Dam all that work for nothing!!! oh well now without a front seat my car is lighter I guess lol...

I command you thread, LIVE AGAIN!
Would the seats from a normal CRX work? I found one in the local junkyard, and they look substantially similar to the ones in your car, but I am not sure if it is a CRX si or just a regular CRX. I don't want to go through the trouble of pulling them and paying for them only to find out they don't work.
as people have stated, searching for CRX is pretty hard on this forum, and they weren't mentioned here:
https://www.zdriver.com/forums/240z-280zxt-s30-s130-tech-tips-275/where-what-seats-can-i-get-my-z-19918/
If the answer is really obvious feel free to laugh. I make no claims to knowing anything.

I think the si is just the package - the seat bolt patterns are more likely than not to be the same. You should be good to go.
