I'm only running 3,000rpm, when my speedo says 80mph lol. (gotta love the '82 5 speeds taller 5th/od gear)

Yes, I put a 81 zx 5 speed in my 260. and with the stock 3.31 gear rear end that puts me at like 2200rpm at 75mph

lol you should really be getting good mileage then, ever really need 5th gear with that set up? Can it actualy still accelerate in 5th? lol. I replaced my distributor yesterday and reset my timing (old distributor wasn't advancing), test run I hit 105 on the speedo in 4th gear, pegged the speedo at 130mph in 5th and was still very slowly gaining speed. Next time I'm going to take my GPS with me and see how fast it's really going. It felt like it might have been close to 120mph.

That's actually almost too low. Below 2500rpm, you'll be bogging the motor going up a hill.

I would get a 3.545 rear end just to get the rpm's up into the motor's optimal operating range.

You'll actually get better gas mileage with a little higher rpm where the motor isn't having to work so hard to move the car along.

Nobody has mentioned, but I have seen a composit hood (I guess it's fiberglass) which will save weight. You also can get an aluminum flywheel & a racing clutch. All of those items above will cut down the weight. Or you can just beef up the engine for more horsepower if the ultimate goal is speed? If that's not enough put in a small block Cheve 350 with an automatic, and you will really lay rubber. As for me I will just stay with my stock Z (except I have a racing clutch to install) HeHe. Good luck

good gas milage there...

dose it sound right that in a 280zx 2+2 GL(heaviest 280zx) i run 3600rpm at 75mph and at 4000 i run 100mph seems like i gain alot of speed on the spedo but dosent feel like 100 i know the speed is right at 65 mph but not higher and i have the same sized tires as stock, just a little wider

is it ok to run the engine at 3600rpm on the interstate ?

You can not gain 25mph in only 400rpm.

Plus I see a picture of your car with an 80mph speedo. How do you know you're going 100?

If your car is stock, you'll be at 100mph in 4th gear at 5300rpm

following the speed that the revs are growing it seems to be at 100 that the car tops out... i mean it could be going 85 but im sure its around 95-100

5speed not 4speed or were you talking about 5speed?

the cars got the 3.9 r200? even knowing that it isnt possble to go to 100 in 400 revs?

Just using the 4th gear as an example. Yes, 3.9 R200
Pull to 5300 in 4th. You'll be at 100mph. Then shift into 5th and keep going. That is the 100+ range. If your car is in good shape you should go past 120 easily.

Or get a long-tube header, and an LD intake manifold? Should help a little in getting enough torque to cruise comfortably down there, no idea how much.

5th gear's just for cruising anyway though man! Who tries to climb hills in 5th?

I had no idea we got Z's with such numerically low rear ends though. Afaik the only thing nissan offers lower is a 3.1x from armada(r230).

Do the stroker L's make enough low-down to cruise 5th in the mid to lower 2krpm range? I couldn't get dynographs out of any of the hybridz stroker crowd.

Yep... whether it has the hp to do so is another issue.

and the only combination thats close to my car is the 4.11 (input manually) gear and a factory competition transmission.

where is the code stamped on the transmission?
