i hate ruast and it hates me
hey all
Before respraying my driver Z i had to remove all the rust on the body and treat it and so forth which i thought i did pretty well but its seems to be bubbling under some parts of te paint where i got (or thought) i got rid of it.... so heres what i did when fixing it..
1) ground it off with a wire brush on an angle grinder.
2) treated it with rust killer stuff.
3) after rust killer was dry i just filled it in with body filler and did the body work over the top...for the most part this has worked fine but on some parts of the car the rust is returning, which im kind pissed about but neway. also i think my problem was that when i did the rust ithad been raining for like 3 weeks and pretty much rianed solidly for weeks and weeks so im thinking the humidity would not be the coolest thing for the bare metal and so forth.
so was just wondering how exactly u guys would deal with a patch of rust...??
just for future refference
thanks
pete

Welcome to the reality of rust! It's really hard to cure rust completely, unless it's entirely removed.
Good remedies:
-Use a metal conditioning acid (3M makes a good one)
-Use a torch to heat up the metal red hot, to remove moisture (can also cause warpage)
-Grind, Grind, Grind
-Cut & patch rust areas

Make sure that there are no tiny holes that have rusted clear through. If so, water will get to the back side of your paint and bondo and start rusting from within.
Also, keep your car out of the rain as much as possible after painting it. Carport and garage it or move to Nevada.

If you still have a rust problem you might contact Restomotive Laboratories at 1-800-457-6715 or at http://www.por15.com. They can send you one of their catalogs which deals strictly with rust & the removal. They have a large selection of products including a gas tank restoration kit. It can help, best of luck.

also ,dont put bondo or anything like that without first sealing the metal, bondo it very pourus and will trap the moisture right ontop of the metal causing rust, if you use a good quality 2 part epoxy primer first, it wont cause any problems, if you really want to go all out, use in this order 1. wash primer, 2. epoxy primer, 3. high build primer, 4. body work, skim coat, putty etc, 4. more high build primer, 5. paint. thats what i did, i live in canada, no rust for me. and media blast where possible, even though it looks gone rust converter.
