New speedometer

The cable that runs my speedometer is broken, so I want to replace the whole thing (it only went up to 80 anyway).
My question is, what do I need to get in order to have a outside the dash speedometer that goes up to at least 120?

Can I go to a parts store like Napa or checkers and just buy one there, or do I need something designed for my car?
Thanks for any help,
-Q

Autometer makes a good universal speedo... but they're not cheap.

Anyway... you just need a speedo that can be calibrated to your rear diff ratio. You can also swap tranny cogs if you get deep into it.

so the 1979 280ZX 120mph speedo isn't good enough?

If you bought that, just grab the used cable from that particular ZX.

Its not that a 1979 120mph speedo wouldn't work, its just that I don't have one. My ZX is a 1983 and it only went up to 80. So I'm just looking for an outside mount new guage. I live in a small(er) town, so I don't think finding what I need at a junkyard will happen very often.

I don't really like the idea of tearing into the dash, I'm not sure why. Could just be afraid of it.

Thanks for the advice NismoPick, I'll head out to a store now and check.
Taxes will be done shortly, granting me (hopefully) around $1000 to put into this car.
Wish me luck,
-Q

Just get a new cable, a white face gauge set for a 130mph speedo, and have a speedo shop recalibrate your old spedometer and put the new gauge faces on.
