Question painting a old ZX shift ****

HI guys; I need to know what I can use to paint a old faded red shift ****. I want to paint it blue. I recently got it on E-bay for $5. Anyway I need to know what kind of spray paint. I can use, that will last and stay on there. Any info. would be great!

I painted my old one with regular black spray paint just to mess around. It seemed to work just fine, but I never really used it that much cause I have an MSA one that is much nicer.

I would think any paint would wear off on your hands. Buy a different **** and just use the red **** in the mean time. :/

Yea I wouldn't recommend that, but if you still want to use some vinyl/ fabric paint (walmart automotive section) that would be your best bet.

Thanks guys, I was just trying to save money, by getting a old faded one. And painting it up. I know I couldv'e got a new one from Motorsport. I am trying to go all custom in my interior. So I am getting different color used parts. And painting them royal blue with a aluminum silver. I will check Walmart this week. And see what I can come up with!

Hey Rod; No I don't want to change it to red. My '81 has original red interior. I want to keep the same blue and silver in my '82. I really like the color scheme.

Talking

It was a joke Wildman... just trying to point out that painting the shift **** and having it stay that color is impossible. I'd go buy a nice aftermarket ****.

Rod.

I wouldn't be surprised if you painted the ****, then gave it a few healthy coats of clearcoat to keep it sealed. I would think that lasts a bit of a while, even with extensive use. Should all else fail, it's only a 10-minute job to repaint the ****.

No problem Rod. I wasn't offended. And Dorito, I did plan on clearcoating after I painted it. Thanks for all the advice and info guys! Sometime soon when I get the interior close to done. I will post some pictures of it. I can't wait until this weekend. When I get my '79 280zx Dark Blue highback seats!

I have some black leather high back buckets that I have been waiting to put in. They should be pretty nice.

Wow that is a pretty good deal! Seats aren't cheap. Especially nice original ones. My original seats are blue and silver with the headrests. But I don't care for them that much. I like the highback buckets better. And they are a dark blue out of a '79. The headrest seats look kind of funny. And take away the sportscar look.

any surfer dudes here? I am just wondering about the surf boards. they are painted up and then some sort of epoxy goes on to protect that paint. See there's beaches up her but I aint crazy enough to hit the waves unless its for the "polar bear swim"
so I dont know much about that stuff

I wonder if it would be worth it to use that struff on the interior plastics and or vinyl parts. can anyone take a jab at this one?

Hey guys I painted the **** last weekend. But it is still sticky. I am going to have to find some interior paint. I wonder if I clearcoated, would it go away? (not be sticky anymore) So I can meticullously paint the numbers on the top of the ****.

If you paint it, let it fully cure before you try using it. And yes, you should definitely clear coat it unless you're using like an appliance paint or something like that that doesn't need clearcoat.

What kind of paint did you use?

Instead of generic paint, I would use a vinyl paint from SEM. It's used for painting interior panels and is designed to adhere to plastic, rubber, vinyl.

It should harden up better as well and it retains some flexibility so it'll probably last longer on the ****.

If anything, I'd try the bumper and trim paint from PlastiKote, but I don't think it's gonna work too well.

For what you would spend on a can of that vinyl paint and clearcoat you could buy a black shifter **** off eBay.
