spray paint

for the amount of money you're going to spend on the large number of cans it will take to spray paint the car (primer, paint, clear) it would probably cost just as much to go down to a local pain supply or auto body store and by some EZ primer and spray it yourself. that way when you can afford to pay for it all you'll have to do is sand it back down and spray on the paint and clear. This is all dependent on the fact that you know someone with a gun and compressor or know someone who knows someone, of course. It will probably look better and cost less in the long run since you're going to have to do this when you get ready to paint, anyway.

I would say to lightly sand the surface of your existing paint. If there are chips or rust, sand to the metal in those spots and use some bare metal primer. (this stuff is not water resistant) Then top it all off with many cans of primer sealer. The sealer is your top coat primer and is weather resistant. The most common color is grey. That type of primer comes out in a nice smooth tone; not all blotchy like glossy spray paint.

What you should do is prep the whole car and get everything ready to go, get everything perfect, then do as bleach said and lay down some primer. Get everything clean and take it to Maaco. They like to lay down the paint-it-before-it-gets-reported-stolen type paint jobs, so you have to get the car in the best shape possible because they won't take the time to prepare the car. Remove all the trim and stuff and they will lay down a good coat of paint. Just wetsand it yourself (be careful) and then roll it back in for a couple coats of clear and you'll be all set.
