It CAN be done

I don't think I'd want to rely on it for crash protection though. It could definitely be done as a strictly stiffening cage though

That right there, would put you too far in the hole to climb out.

Just don't go out like John Z. DeLorian did, J.

So here's a thought: I want to make a fiberglass hood for someone here on ZDriver (you know who you are ). I'm assuming that when you said vented you were referring to the competition coupe hood pasted in another post. Well here's some pics of what I'm thinking about making. How many people would be interested in seeing something like this on your Z?

The main differences I want to make are to remove the vents that are in the middle of the hood and just keep the side vents and the front scoop. And instead of just cutting the stock hump on the ZX hood I'm actually going to reshape the hump to better suit the scoop. Make it flow better. So what do guys think? s/c, just give it a thumbs up if this is what you're talking about

Eventually, someday when it's available, I'll make it out of carbon too. But in the mean time a fiberglass version will save you a few pounds and if you're looking for something other than the stock hood then this might fit the bill.

On another note. I'm going to be starting on some carbon parts most likely within a week so you guys will get your first look at some carbon goodness for the 280zx soon. Nothing major to start, just some small things for one of our fellow Zers. But carbon none the less. And, for that same Zer, a full carbon body kit soon after. Stay tuned for that one. It's going to be wicked

J, you're tantalizing my tastebuds ...

... you know, I'm buying an '82 Zed [yes, thats right, TURBO HOOD BABY!], once you make one of those hoods, I'll trade ya my turbo hood for one of those, plus some cash your way. Savvy?

Can't wait to see what you've got planned, bro.

Peace.

D, if you pay shipping I'd trade you straight up Of course at that point it might be cheaper for you to just pay full price for one Well, a fiberglass one anyways. Now carbon would be another story $$$

I think there ought to be a vent on the hump towards the rear end in order to help "breathe out" the hot underhood air. But don't have vents on the rear-sides too, or else it would let water drain onto the battery tray. Releasing the underhood air was always one of the biggest problems to cooling so a rearward vent would help.

Yeah, I'm no longer rocking a T-top, so I'll want as much CF on my car from you to make up for it. Seriously though, you and I are going to make my Zed look HOT.

I could always leave the passenger side vents closed. They could be trimmed after purchase if need be. Since theres not much heat on that side of the engine compartment. I was thinking of making the front scoop a NACA duct and getting rid of the hump altogether. I could make the inner fram thinner so clearance wouldnt be an issue. What do you guys think of that idea? I'll photoshop something up (Limewire is great. Free software ). And when I say NACA I mean integrated into the hood. Not a bolt on affair like the ones on there now. Keep it smooth. I'll do a little art work and show you guys what I come up with.

I like that idea J. It would be interesting to see the hood without the bulge. Not sure if would look good or not, but if you draw it up we'll know. Can't wait to see it.

I dunno ... maybe if you wanted to in the future, you could build a hood with an offset bulge? I'm going to tilt my engine toward the passenger side more, to have a bit more room to work with ITBs [or turbos, for my other engine ], and I'm not sure about clearance. I've always liked the "power bulge" that DSMs have to clear their cam sprocket cover, figure it wouldn't look half bad on a Zed.

The ZX wouldn't look right without the hood bulge; don't forget, the bulge continues on to the bodywork just in front of the windshield (where that black plastic vent is).

Sorry Rod, I gotta go where the money already is When I've got money in hand from a customer I've gotta take the path they choose. And if they want a body kit, then so be it. But don't worry, ttops are hard in the works. I've got two designs I'm working on now: 1 is the carbon ttops and how to get the ****'s to latch properly. I think I've finally got it but I've got to actually give it a whirl to test it. Carbons expensive so there's no point in me trying til I think I've got something that will work. And 2: is a lighter carbon/kevlar version of the under bumper and the struts that support it. And yeah Skully, we're getting started as we speak. Should be seeing the first few carbon parts here in no time at all. I still maintain before christmas.

Since this post is all about what parts you want to see and not so much about the business itself I'm going to start yet another thread. You guys will like this one. Oh and Skully, I think thats a really good idea. I don't know about video since I don't have a video camera, but I'll take some pics along the way to my first parts so you guys can bite of me and put me out of business by making your own parts. Wait, all of a sudden that doesn't sound like such a good idea
