Looking for coilvoers
Hey all....I have a '79 280 ZX with a good amount of work done to it since I bought it in '95. Car is fully built up, from motor to chassis. Right now I run Suspension techniques race springs with KYB struts, and it works well enough (very stiff and handles good...not comfortable at all). The cage we did also stiffened the car up significantly (welded in of course!).
Anyway, I am after a proper set of coilovers for the car, and I realize its tall order. Way back when in Japan, HKS, Tein and others had full coilover systems for these cars, but no more.
I know ground Control makes the sleeved set, but I am after a proper set of coilovers.....pillow ball mounts front and rear, adjustable lower perch, dampening adjustable. Just not into going the whole sleeved route.
so, has anyone done, or heard of a set that can be done.I realize the costs involved and given what I have into this car, it does not scare me, if the product gives me the desired results. I ahve contacted penske and Ohlins about doing a custom set, but neither got back to me (big surprise!). So, my next call would be to Carrera, and to Ground Control to see if they would do one of their full sets for me. Again, if this is a race only part, then so be it. As it is, I am lucky if this car will be driven moe than 5000 miles per year, as it is not exactly a daily driver at this point (though I did keep the A/C!)

Well, I'm not totally sure if you have contacts in Japan or not, but Arita Speed in Japan is very familar with the S30, S31 and S130Z body styles as they frequently race on the circuits there. I know for a fact they have custom coilovers for the S30 and S31's, but not sure about the S130Z (280ZX). You could try them... I'll have to look for their website in an Option mag. Good luck on finding someone that has custom coilovers, it's gonna be very hard to find.

Okay I got it! www.aritaspeed.com.
Man they changed their site to something easy to remember! Hopefully they can help you out even though it looks pricey for a their coilover set for the cars listed.... ~1500 bucks usd.

Well, i will ahve to call them tomorrow, as there is no email address.
I heard from Ohlins today..they can custom do a set for the car, as aone off piece. price is more than the convetional coilovers we deal with everyday at our shop (Tein and JIC), but its a much more sophisticated setup, with remote resevoirs, etc. Anyway, I will talk to them a bit more and see what is exactly involved.
I also plan on calling Penske this week, since they are in PA, whic is somewhat local for us (I am in NY).
If anyone else comes across any JDM ones though, please please let me know!
TIA!

If things don't pan out, with setups from Japan, I'd give Ross an e-mail at www.modern-motorsports.com He's making my coil-over setup. My car might not be as modified as yours, but if you tell him what you want, he'll work with you. Pretty nice guy. Good luck.

to continue on to this post......i really dont wanna order anything over internet or anything like that and the parts store here has front coilovers but the back ones they dont carry anymore BUT they do have ones that are 1" HIGHER (but stiffer) than stock replacement......do you guys think that would be ok to bring it up one inch so the backs jacked up n fron it lower.....i like the sound of that......

The Modern Motorsports ones look ok..sort of a better version of the Ground Control (with the lower adjustable perch...nice feature), but I want a full integrated unit, not a sleeved setup.
Ohlins got back to me...very very expensive, but I may just take the plunge later on in the year...we'll have to get more details first about the setup.

Nope, no luck at all..NOPI is a bunch of turds honestly...I have known that for years now ![Smilie](https://www.zdriver.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
The NISMo guy had no clue, but last Friday we had a bit of luck
We are an authorixed TEIN dealer, and the President was at our shop visiting, as they do each year. In talking with him, they said they could do a custom set for us..initial prie would be quite high, subsequent kits would be much cheaper, but still pricey, as Tein is very high end.
However, I think I am going to take the plunge, as I really need these for my car at this point. We will most likely also ahve them doa set for the early cars, as there is a 280 Z that belongs to one of my employees that is sweet (bright yellow....turbocharged the stock motor with an old school Cartech kit we dug up..car RIPS)..he'll soon be sprting full standalone and a Garrett GT3040R turbo, so the coilovers will come in handy.
