1982 280zx flasher?

Just bought a 1982 zx last week. The turn signals and hazards don't work so I'm checking out the obvious things first as in fuses and the flasher. The problem is I can't find anywhere for a flasher to be mounted. The Haynes shows the location by the brake pedal but nothing is there.I suspect that the last mechanic may have removed it; still seems like I should be able to find a location to plug one in! I read that the flasher changed on the 82 model, just how much of a change was it! Relocation or what? If anyone knows where it actually is it would be appreciated!,
Thanks Bruce

Welcome to ZDriver! It is actually above the pedals. There's one metal cylinder for hazards, one for turn signals. Also, I've found that if the hazards switch isn't completely on or off, neither hazards or turn signals will work.

Yup, mine's near the brake too, though i had to really look to find it. Then again mine was ducktaped black, but yeah, they're silver.Oh, and before i forget...

Hi,
Nothing that I can find there,Haynes shows it by the wiper amplifier, not there either! Haynes also states that in 1982 the flashers were combined into one unit. Did the unit change looks then? Parts store still has it as the small round can. The car is not trashed in anyway. Two owners and garage kept for 25 years. Not like you would expect the flasher to be moved!

Well i had my seeing-eye Wolfy go out and take some pics of my blinker thingy. The first one is suppose to be the blinker (without black tape) itself attached to it's white clip, and the second is the clip where it was attached to my steering column....i hope that helps.

Oops, i forgot to mention that the panel with the little glowy light that turn on when you open the door was removed so your panel might be in the way.

Thanks, not sure if thats it but I do have a clip just hanging. The pattern isn't the same as the flasher and I was looking for a bracket (like the nice book shows) What year model is that picture from?

that one is from a 1982, early 1982 model if there really was a difference, and that flasher runs both my blinkers and hazards

Laying on my back and feeling around didn't turn up anything new flasher related just now, It did let me find an A/C duct that had disconnected anyway. All things help! I'll check the assorted flashers tomorrow and see if the prongs fit the hanging white connection. The parts house has 4 listed but claimed they were all the basically the same. The previous owners mechanic may have just left it out when he couldn't find the problem.
Thanks

i think it's a three-prong female connector if there is no flasher attached

Thanks, that was enough info for me to finally find it! Above the column at the back, in a metal clip. It didn't help that it was completely hidden from eyesight and had to be felt for! The canister part is also about 3 times larger than the one the parts store sold me today! Your picture of the flasher was a big help.
Thanks, Bruce

The guys that owned it take pretty good care of it. other than swapping brakes, hoses, shocks etc.in normal maintenance and front carpet, its original with 133K and drives great.

wow, it sounds like it's been really taken care of. I'm sure it looks gorgeous, have you looked around and under the body for rust? That seems to be the biggest problems with Z's

If you look carefully in the first picture you can see it's one bad spot. About a 3/4 inch hole by the gas cap. The only other rust is a paint bud under the tag and surface rust in the bottom of the spare tire well. I had it checked out by a nephew who restores cars professionally. Now I'm waiting for a slot in his line up to fix the spot and possibly respray the car. Its got the usual rock dings on the hood that need to be sanded and sprayed.Keeping these in a garage is the way to go! Now if I could just find room in mine! This was actually bought for my wife, its hard to get it away from her to even check it out!

Not to revive a 11 year old thread but...I bought another 82 ZX and thought I'd do a quick Google to refresh my thoughts before starting to fix the turn signals. Caught me by surprise when I saw my first posting pop up! I'd forgotten that I started out with another ZX with the same problem back in 2007! Unfortunately a t-bone collision ended it's days on the road.
