i would guess that either all your connections are not good, and you should check again, or that the lights and the poor running are unrelated. i don't think that the lights and the poor running are related.

to fix the poor running, do the regular tune up, like dizzy cap and rotor, check all the plug connections, do a balance test to see if it's one specific cylinder, make sure it's got fresh fuel in it, then get back on here.

How did you check the alternator if you couldn't check the voltage? If all the dash lights are on, the alt is likely not charging, or over charging.

Bad running could be timing, AFM, TPS, CHTS, clogged fuel injectors, low fuel pressure...

it has a new cap, rotor, and plugs it's my daily driver so fresh gas.i checked the firing order, it's good. when you say a balance test, do you mean a compression test? i can do that.

NismoPick i checked all the connections on the alternator they were tight. took it off and had it checked at the local auto parts store.they said it was good??? can't check the timing till i can get it started. right??
i think it may be low fuel pressure. i will try to find a pressure tester.
what is the AFM, and CHTS
Thanks for all your help, i miss my Z

AFM: air flow meter. near the intake, wires going to it.

you can static test the timing, which can give you a general idea, but not accuracy.

by balance test i mean pull plug wires individually to see which one doesn't make a difference in the way it runs. pulling a plug while it's running like you say it is should just stop the engine. if you pull one and it keeps going the same, there is something wrong with that cylinder. you need to check that that specific cylinder is getting spark then, then you need to see if it's getting fuel (is the plug wet).

AFM - Air Flow Meter
CHTS - Cylinder Head Temp Sensor

yeah look it up in the FSM. it deals with testing resistances.

#1... Are you sure you got the correct ECU?

#2... Does it run (idle / rev) at all? You said it runs bad, but won't stay running....

#3... Pull all spark plugs & look @ the tips... Are they wet? Dry? What color?

NismoPick #1 yes
#2 no it will not run. it starts then stalls
#3 the plugs are new. when it started running bad i replaced the plugs cap and rotor.
the car has been my daily driver. i noticed the dash lights. did a search, checked the alternator.that's when i noticed the ecm smelled burnt, opened it up and found it fried. i got a new one (for a 83 only) installed it, did a complete tuneup. now i cant get it to start.

if it starts for a second and runs decently, then stalls out, it's almost definitely fuel delivery. i'd put the fuel pressure test at the top of the list now.

New alternator (voltage too low, amps too high) cleaned all the engine grounds and the dash grounds. Another ECM, also did the little trick on AFM. Runs better than it ever did. Thanks Nismopick you were right about the alternator.
The first time I had it tested off the car at Auto Zone and they said it was fine, got it running and drove it to O'Reillys and they tested it and said it was putting out 12.2 volts and 167 amps. Maybe that's why I fried 2 computers.
