280zx Headers

Ok, so on an impulse buy I snatched up a of Hooker Super Comp header for cheap. Plan to get it powder or heat coated, and port matching it before putting it on the car. The guy had it on a 78 280z L28 N/A. He told me it should work just fine on my 80 280zx, but I might have to notch the driver side motor mount to clear one pipe. Wondering if anybody out there has been this route and might offer some advice?

Also, should I got ahead and buy the motorsport auto gasket, stud and nut kit, and will I need the spacers? I think I remember him saying something about that.

All L-Series motors (L24, L26, L28E, L28ET) used the same motor mounts... so if the header fit with the motor mounts on a 78 L28E, it will also fit on an 80 L28E, unless he had to notch his to make it fit.

it most likely won't work on your car at all

I've got a header from a S30 (280Z) and it fits like crap, I had to cut and weld the three rear tubes farther back to clear the steering arm.

^^^ ah, you have the steering box (his 80 looks to have one too)... Indeed that would get in the way. Shouldn't be a prob w/ rack & pinion though.

I did some rough measurements and it looks like the header should clear the steering box by at least an inch? 8 1/8 flange to outer pipe 9 1/4 from head to gear box. I have a running 83 that I am parting out, if I could find someone to buy the motor and trans out of it, I could swap the rack, and whatever else onto my car if need be. But I am going to try to make this work. If not I guess it will be up for trade for a correct header after it gets ceramic coated.

I need to do something, my exhaust is currently tack welded onto the manifold.. LOL

Pontiac Kid, how much did you have to add on the rear collector to make it work>?

I did some research and just need somebody to help confirm this. My cylinder head is a N47, and from what I have collected, it has diamond (round) exhaust ports. So I am thinking this header will not work, it is square port.

resources.

Willing to trade with cash for the correct header, or other "Z" related items. Plan on sand blasting and priming with 1300* primer.

i have the correct header with 2.5" collector, has the egr ports and a o2 sensor bung. plus i have a large stash of parts that you could need. id put that header to good use. i have a 79, but can mod it where needed, if needed to fit. itll save me making my own.

I've got rack and pinion. a real sports car with manual steering

the problem is the steering arm doesn't stay close to the frame rail and cuts into the bay quite a bit.

just save yourself all the bullshit and get a header built for your car.

i dont really know what shipping would cost. ill have my passport in a bit so ill be able to ship from the states to save major headaches and cost. so measure and weigh it and just calculate using sumas washington for the shipping point. dont worry about the sandblasting and primer. its just uneeded cost and time wasted. whats the collector size on that one. ill prolly just hack it off and change it to 3" anyway

cool beans, ill get my header down and take a pic, unless i find one on my computer here. this one is actually meant for your car, i tok off the 2" collector and properly installed a 2.5" one so it flows properly. it has an o2 bung and the egr port as well. your header should woprk well for me as 2.5" is no longer big enough. did you look up shipping? i saw you also posted on hybridz with no luck. seems your header is a dud with most people

Haven't had a chance on shipping. It's square port for sure. You'd need an N42 or P90 to run it.

The flow would be obstructed, would it not? I don't know if I could port match them or not. Maybe with a grinding stone and the dremel?

On another note. I swapped the compressor, dryer, accumulator, and r134 fittings on my car today, and the ac is blowing cold as hell, but my coil wire decided it didn't want to stay on the coil anymore, and i swapped a spare on, and it started running worse. Think my coil decided to take a ****...... I have the best luck......
